WINONA, Minn. — Gia Puch (Des Plaines, Ill.) and Katelyn Rizzi (Austin, Minn.) were the on-the-course leaders for the Saint Mary’s University women’s golf team in 2008. The duo also proved to be the team’s off-the-course leaders, as well, as both Puch and Rizzi were among 67 NCAA Division III women’s golfers named to the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) All-American Scholar Team, it was announced Wednesday.

WINONA, Minn. — The post-season honors keep rolling in for Saint Mary’s University’s Cassie Otte (Randolph, Minn.). And this time, the senior outfielder isn’t alone. Less than a week after being named SMU’s lone representative on the NFCA/Louisville Slugger Second Team All-Region, Otte was selected to the All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference First Team for the third straight season, it was announced Wednesday. Joining Otte on the conference’s post-season podium is Cardinal pitcher/first baseman Mallory Betzold (Farmington, Minn.), who is making her first appearance on the all-conference squad.

WINONA, Minn. — It was the perfect ending to the perfect season for Saint Mary’s University’s Rebecca Snyder (Eden Prairie, Minn.). Snyder, who did not lose a dual-meet match at No. 2 singles for the Cardinal women’s tennis team all season, was named to the All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Singles and Doubles Teams, it was announced Thursday. In her first collegiate season, Snyder compiled a perfect 11-0 record — with all 11 wins coming at No. 2, while also posting a 9-3 doubles record.

PELLA, Iowa — It was the “last chance” for the Saint Mary’s University track and field teams to tune up before next weekend’s Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships — and #Teri Heinzen# (Marshfield, Wis.) certainly made the most of it. Heinzen collected a pair of first-place finishes — winning both the 100 (12.82) and 200 (26.08) — to fuel the Cardinals’ performance at Friday’s Central Invitational.

Softball
Otte saved her best season for last, and that effort didn’t go unnoticed, as Otte earned NFCA/Louisville Slugger Second Team honors, as well as being named to the All-MIAC First Team for the third straight year.
Otte started all 40 games for the Cardinals, who finished tied for fifth in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings with a 10-12 record and closed out the year 18-22 overall. She closed out a stellar collegiate career in 2009, leading the team in virtually every offensive category, including career-bests in batting average (.449), at-bats (147), runs (38), hits (66), total bases (70), on-base percentage (.477) and stolen bases (21). Her 66 hits rank No. 2 in program history behind SMU Hall of Famer Jenny Garin’s 72 hits in 1997, while her .449 batting average ranks 10th all-time.
With her 2-for-4 and 2-for-5 performances in her final two games at SMU Field on April 28, Otte finished with a team-best 22 multiple-hit games this season. Among her 22 multiple-hit games was a pair of four-hit performances. Otte had only one four-hit effort in her first three years combined.

Baseball
Olberding earned All-MIAC First-Team honors, it was announced on May 13. A sophomore catcher/designated hitter, Olberding started 19 of the team’s 20 league games, not only leading the Cardinals in batting average at .386, but also boasting team highs in hits (22), doubles (5), RBIs (9), total bases (30), and slugging percentage (.526).
For the season, Olberding finished with a team-leading .394 batting average (39-for-99) with 13 runs and team highs in home runs (3) and RBIs (19). Olberding also shared the team lead with 12 multiple-hit games and five multiple-RBI games.
