WINONA, Minn. — The post-season honors keep rolling in for Saint Mary’s University’s Cassie Otte (Randolph, Minn.). And this time, the senior outfielder isn’t alone. Less than a week after being named SMU’s lone representative on the NFCA/Louisville Slugger Second Team All-Region, Otte was selected to the All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference First Team for the third straight season, it was announced Wednesday. Joining Otte on the conference’s post-season podium is Cardinal pitcher/first baseman Mallory Betzold (Farmington, Minn.), who is making her first appearance on the all-conference squad.

WINONA, Minn. — After putting together a career year in 2008, capped by being named both First Team All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and NFCA Louisville Slugger All-Region — only one question remained for Sainnt Mary’s University’s Cassie Otte (Randolph, Minn.) — what to do for an encore? LA CROSSE, Wis. — It just didn’t seem to matter how many runs the Saint Mary's University fastpitch softball team scored in their final two doubleheaders — it just wasn’t enough. Just a day after scoring 15 runs in 7-5 and 11-10 losses to UW-River Falls at SMU Field, the Cardinals drew the short straw in both ends of their final twinbill of the season Thursday, losing to UW-La Crosse 3-2 and 6-0.

WINONA, Minn. — If there was one sure thing about the Saint Mary’s University fastpitch softball team’s nonconference doubleheader against UW-River Falls, it was that no lead was a sure thing. The Falcons raced out to a seven-run lead in the opener, and had to hold on for dear life, as SMU pulled to within two — and left the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning — in falling to UW-River Falls 7-5. And in the nightcap, UW-RF again raced out to a huge lead, this time a 7-1, second-inning cushion, only to have SMU score nine unanswered runs and take a two-run, 10-8 lead into the top of the seventh — where Mindy Rudiger belted a three-run home run over the center field fence to complete the Falcons’ sweep, 11-10.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — For the third time this season — and the second time in the last three days — the Saint Mary’s University fastpitch softball team squared off against a nationally ranked team when the Cardinals took the field for Saturday’s Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against eighth-ranked St. Thomas. And, unfortunately for SMU, the third time was no charm, as the Tommies threw back-to-back shutouts at the Cardinals, rolling to 7-0 and 8-0 wins in the teams’ conference finale.

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary’s University fastpitch softball team stepped out of the frying pan that is the grueling Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule. And right into the fire. The Cardinals took a “break” from their conference slate Thursday at the SMU Field, but there was no resting, as SMU squared off against UW-Eau Claire — last year’s NCAA Division III national champions and this year’s 18th-ranked team in the nation. And the Blugolds’ offensive attack was certainly national-championship caliber, as UW-Eau Claire burned the Cardinals for 11 Game 1 runs en route to an 12-1, five-inning victory, then completed the sweep with a 9-1 triumph in the nightcap.
