ST. PETER, Minn. — Mike Lunka (Eagan, Minn.) kicked off his collegiate tennis career in impressive fashion Friday, as the Saint Mary’s University freshman picked up back-to-back singles wins during the opening day of the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional. Lunka made quick work of Augustana’s Will Palmer in his collegiate debut, winning 6-2, 7-5, then followed that up with a three-set, 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 triumph over Luther’s Max Peipkorn to earn a spot in the Round of 32.

WINONA, Minn. — It was the perfect end for the Saint Mary’s University men’s and women’s tennis teams. In seasons that have seen more than their fare share of ups and downs, the Cardinal rollercoaster ended on a high for both SMU teams, as the men dropped visiting Hamline 6-3 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match, while the women closed out their season with a 7-2 conference win over the Pipers at the Winona Indoor Tennis Center.

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — It was a new opponent, but for Saint Mary’s University men’s tennis coach Jeff Halberg, it was like going back in time — to two days ago. Just days after dropping a 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference decision to St. Thomas, Halberg’s Cardinals squared off against Saint John’s — with the exact same results, as the Johnnies won all six singles matches in straight sets en route to a 9-0 conference win at the SJU courts Saturday.

FRIDLEY, Minn. — As if having to face the high-powered St. Thomas men’s tennis team wasn’t tough enough, Saint Mary’s University had to do so without the sevices of their No. 1 singles and doubles player. And the Tommies certainly didn’t feel sorry for the shorthanded Cardinals, rolling to a 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory at the Lifetime Fitness Center.

FARGO, N.D. — There were times Friday evening that Saint Mary’s University tennis coach Jeff Halberg had the feeling his men’s and women’s teams would come away from the Courts Plus Tennis Center with a pair of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victories over Concordia. And there were other times Halberg feared his teams would come out on the short end. It was those other times that got the better of the Cardinals, as Concordia rallied from a 4-1 deficit to beat the SMU women 5-4, while the Cardinal men dropped a pair of three-set matches in falling to the Cobbers 6-3.

Athletes of the Week
Curt VanAsten
Men's Track & Field
VanAsten broke the school's 200 hurdles record during Saturday's Border Battle, shattering the 14-year-old record by nearly a second in clocking a time of 25.62 to win the event. VanAsten's time was not only a school record, but also a meet and fieldhouse record as well.
Stevie Fiek
Women's Hockey
Fiek scored two goals and added an assist at the Cardinals split their MIAC series against Augsburg last weekend. The SMU sophomore picked up her team-leading 10th assist in Friday's 4-1 loss, then netted the game's first two goals in leading the Cardinals to a 5-1 win in the rematch Saturday
