MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Saint Mary’s University baseball team kicked its 2010 season off on the right foot — thanks to the right arm of pitcher Andrew Ruf (Chippewa Falls, Wis.). Ruf tossed a complete-game, seven-hit shutout in leading the Cardinals to a season-opening 1-0 nonconference victory over Mayville (N.D.) State at the Metrodome Wednesday afternoon. Things didn’t go quite as well in the nightcap, however, as Mayville State scored three times in the bottom of the third and held off a late SMU rally to beat the Cardinals 4-3 to earn the split.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Saint Mary’s University baseball team kicks off its 2010 season with the first of three games in the HHH Metrodome, when the Cardinals square off against Mayville State University in an 11 a.m. nonconference doubleheader. SMU will also face Indiana University Northwest (March 15) and Loras (March 21) in the Dome, before heading south for seven games in Phoenix, Ariz.

SMU earns USTFCCCA All-Academic honors
WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary’s University men’s and women’s cross country teams earned U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association academic honors, it was announced Friday. The Cardinal men were one of eight Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schools to receive the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors, while the SMU women were among 10 conference schools named to the All-Academic Team.
