WINONA, Minn. — The Chicago Blackhawks captured their first Stanley Cup championship in 49 years with their 4-2 series win over the Philadelphia Flyers Wednesday evening, and for the first time ever, a Saint Mary's University alum — Chicago president John McDonough '75 — will have his name etched on Lord Stanley's Cup.

BEREA, Ohio — It wasn’t quite what he was hoping for, but Saint Mary’s University’s Andrew Brueggen (Holmen, Wis.), and track and field coach Shawn McMahon weren’t complaining. Brueggen, making his second straight NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships appearance, had his sights set on a Top 8 finish, which would earn the Cardinal junior his second All-American honor of the 2010 season. Unfortunately, Brueggen’s best hammer throw Thursday afternoon wasn’t quite enough, as his throw of 54.40 failed to land him a spot in the finals.

WINONA, Minn. — When Saint Mary’s University’s Andrew Brueggen (Holmen, Wis.) steps into the circle for his first throw Thursday afternoon, he is going to try and approach things like it’s just another throw in just another meet. Emphasis on try. After all, this isn’t any other throw at any other meet — this is the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Track and Field Championships.

LA CROSSE, Wis. — They couldn’t quite eclipse that elusive NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark, so Teri Heinzen (Marshfield, Wis.) and Josiah Ryks (Austin, Minn.) did the next-best thing — break Saint Mary’s University outdoor track and field records in their final event of the season. Heinzen stopped the clock in 25.32 in the 200 at Thursday’s UW-La Crosse Last Chance Meet, breaking her own mark of 25.80, while Ryks also rewrote his own record in the 400, turning in a time of 49.97.

WINONA, Minn. — When it comes to post-season honors, Kellie Simons (Richfield, Minn.) is now a perfect 2-for-2. Just a day after earning her first-ever First-Team All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection, Simons added all-region honors to her collegiate softball resume, as the Saint Mary’s University junior was named to the NFCA/Louisville Slugger Third-Team All-Midwest Region, it was announced Wednesday. And Simons had some post-season company, as freshman Erin Stenseth (Eau Claire, Wis.) was also named to the NFCA Third Team.
