Saint Mary's Notes: The Cardinals enter the Sugar Loaf Classic with a 4-1 overall record, having extending their winning streak to three straight with a 3-1 win over UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday. … SMU got a match- and career-high 16 kills from Sarah Gardner (Rochester, Minn.) in their win over the Pointers Wednesday. … Rachel Monterastelli (Wonder Lake, Ill.) enjoyed her second 50-plus assist night vs. UW-Stevens Point, dishing out a career-best 54 in the four-game win. … Alex Nold (Spring Valley, Minn.) leads the team  in kills (58), while Gardner is second with 52. Gardner also boasts a team-best .316 attach percentage, while Jessica Mate (St. Charles, Ill.)  is the team-leader in aces (15) and Theresa Perrini (Fairway, Kan.) boasts a team-best 100 digs. … The Cardinals are 2-0 in three-game matches and 2-0 in four-game matches. Their lone loss was a 3-2 decision to Clarke during the opening round of the Ripon Tournament on Aug. 31.

Luther Notes: Luther enters the weekend with an overall record of 2-3. The Norse are
fresh off a 3-0 victory over the University of Dubuque in the Iowa Conference opener for both teams.  … Luther first-year Head Coach Jane Gibbs is a familiar face to MIAC fans. A 2004 graduate of the University of St. Thomas, Gibbs was a four-time all-conference performer and two-time All-American who was named MIAC MVP as a senior.

UW-Superior Notes: UW-Superior enters the weekend with a 3-1 record, having opened the season with a 3-1 record. The Yellowjackets defeated the University of Dallas, 3-0, and followed up with a 3-1 victory over East Texas Baptist. They also defeated Texas-Tyler, 3-0, before losing to Hardin-Simmons, 2-3. … UW-Superior has reached double-digits in victories in three of four years under head coach Lynne Deadrick.  Prior to Deadrick's arrival, the Yellowjackets went four consecutive seasons without achieving double-digits in wins.

Marian Notes: Marian enters the weekend with a 1-3 record, having opened with a 3-0 loss to St. Norbert College, a 3-1 loss to Aurora Univiversity, a 3-1 loss to University of Chicago and a 3-0 win over Finlandia University. … Heather Alft was named to the All-Tournament team. She recorded 28 kills and a team-high 12 blocks (7 solo/5 assist). … The Sabres have a very young lineup as they have just one senior. …  Sophomore Amy Malcore leads the team in kills with 43 after four matches. She had 52 kills on the season as a freshman. … Jamie Mau and Courtney have shared the setting duties, boasting 51 and 50 assists, respectively.

Crown Notes: Crown enters the weekend with an 0-3 record, having opened the season at Faith Baptist's Spike Fest Tournament last weekend. The Storm fell to Moody Bible Institute (3-2), Southeastern (Fla.) (3-2), and Grace (3-0).  … Annette Case, a junior NCCAA All-Region Second-Team selection, is the Storm's top returner, while seniors Crystal Ewing and Monica Hostetler also return.

Wartburg Notes: The Knights are 1-4 coming into this weekend’s tournament. Wartburg dropped a 3-0 decision to 11-time Iowa Conference defending champion Central Tuesday in the league opener for both sides and ended 1-3 at UW-La Crosse’s tournament last weekend. … Individually, senior middle hitter Ashley Rogers has been the story for the Orange and Black. She already has three 20-kill matches to her credit, including a .350 attack percentage in the loss to the Dutch, part of a season .274 attack percentage and 89 kills. She earned all-tournament honors at La Crosse last weekend and is making a strong charge to break the program’s current career record for kills, held by former AVCA All-American Dia Dohlman.… On the back line defensively, senior libero Ashley Steines and senior defensive specialists Heather Harvey and Leigh Christensen have been solid, leading the way as the squad averages 23.63 digs per game. … Wartburg is the defending champion of the Jefferson Sugar Loaf Classic, winning three of four matches last year. This year’s trip is the fourth straight Jefferson Sugar Loaf Classic appearance for head coach Jennifer Walker’s program. The Knights sport a 7-5 all-time Sugar Loaf record.

UW-Oshkosh Notes: UW-Oshkosh, ranked ninth in the NCAA Division III by the American Volleyball Coaches, enters this weekend’s tournament with a 5-1 record.  The Titans posted 3-0 wins over St. Norbert College and Edgewood College on Tuesday to extend their winning streak to five matches. …  Senior middle blocker Leah Rosenbaum received all-tournament honors to lead UW-Oshkosh to a 3-1 record at the Elmhurst College Invitational held Aug. 31-Sept. 1 in Elmhurst, Ill.  Rosenbaum, a two-time NCAA Division III All-American, hit .400 with 58 kills in 120 attempts.  She also compiled 10 solo blocks, 12 digs and two service aces in the tournament. … UW-Oshkosh returns six of its seven starters from last year’s team that compiled a 32-6 record and shared the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) title with UW-Eau Claire.  The Titans lost a 3-2 decision to the University of St. Thomas in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Division III Championship. … UW-Oshkosh is seeking its fifth 30-plus win season in eight years and its third straight WIAC championship. … UW-Oshkosh has won 73 of its last 85 matches. … UW-Oshkosh has made 11 appearances in the NCAA Division III Championship.  The Titans finished second in the country in 1994 and fourth in 1991 and 1996.

North Park Notes: North Park is off to a 3-2 start in the 2007 season. After taking three out of four matches at the Wisconsin Lutheran Tourney to start the year, the Vikings dropped their home opener Tuesday in a close match with Concordia University-Chicago that went the maximum five games. … North Park's incoming class, led by transfer student Yaifeh Chafeh, has ignited a new fire into the team under coach Coley Johnsen, who enters her second year.

Loras Notes: The Duhawks enter this weekend with a 3-1 record, having had their season-opening three-match winning streak snapped with a 3-1 loss to UW-Platteville Wednesday. … Loras opened the season by capturing the Monmouth Invitational on Sept. 1, beating Robert Morris (3-0), St. Mary's (3-1) and Principia (3-2). … Jenny Dziubla, a first-team All-IIAC selection as a sophomore in 2006, earned all-tournament honors at Monmouth. … After going 0-8 in the IIAC in 2005, first-year head coach Teresa Kehe led the Duhawks to a 4-4 conference mark in 2006, and Loras is picked fifth by the coaches in the 2007 preseason poll.

Baseball
Warren hit a team-leading .435 in the Cardinals' seven games last week, collecting 10 hits in 23 at-bats. He also scored five times and drove in three runs as SMU went 3-4 in its seven contests last week. The junior left-fielder finished with 11 total bases an a .478 slugging percentage. He also made 56 putouts with three assists defensively.

Stenseth hit .467 in the Cardinals' eight games last week, collecting 14 hits — including four doubles — in 30 at-bats. The SMU freshman, who also scored five runs and drove in seven, boasted a .600 slugging percentage and a .484 on-base percentage, while making seven putouts in left field.

Sarah Gardner collected 17 kills Wednesday evening vs. Viterbo, giving the SMU senior 1,007 kills for her career. She is the 10th player in SMU volleyball history to eclipse the 1,000 career kills mark.
