MORRIS, Minn. — The start was memorable.

The finish wasn't.

The Saint Mary's University men's soccer team got on the board first in its nonconference, season-opening game against UM-Morris Friday. Problem was, that was the extent of the Cardinals' offense — and the Cougars were just getting warmed up.

UM-Morris scored five unanswered goals — including three in the game's final 45 minutes — as the Cougars handed SMU a 5-1 setback.

"It wasn't exactly what we were hoping for to start the season," said SMU coach Chris Dembiec. "We got out of the gates pretty quickly, but from there, we just seemed to spin our wheels."

#Jovenel D'Haiti# (Evanston, Ill.) got the Cardinals on the board less than three minutes into the opening half, but the Cougars responded with two goals before the first half ended and three more in the second half en route to the season-opening win.

"(UM-Morris) is a big, strong team and I thought we did a pretty good job against them for the first 45 minutes," said Dembiec, whose team is back in action Saturday, traveling to Aberdeen, S.D., for a nonconference game against Presentation. "We just our composure a bit (in the second half) and that really hurt us."
