ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Mary’s University men’s soccer team, coming off their final home game of the season — a 2-0 loss against Augsburg Tuesday — hits the road for its season finale on Saturday, traveling to St. Thomas for a 1 p.m. conference contest.

Last Action: The Cardinals’ Jon Szafranski (Barrington, Ill.) stopped 11 shots, but it was not enough, as Augsburg scored single goals in each half en route to a 2-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win Tuesday at Ochrymowycz Field. St. Thomas, meanwhile, battled Concordia to a 0-0 double-overtime tie Tuesday in St. Paul, Minn.

Last Meeting: October 25, 2008: Steve Boussie (Troy, Mich.) scored the game’s only goal in the 60th minute and Jon Szafranski (Barrington, Ill.) stopped all six St. Thomas shots, as the Cardinals knocked off the Tommies 1-0 at Ochrymowycz Field.

Saint Mary’s Cardinal Notes: Jon Szafranski (Barrington, Ill.) stopped 11 Augsburg shots in Tuesday’s 2-0 loss. It was the fifth time this season the senior goalkeeper has stopped 10 or more shots. … With the 11 saves, Szafranski has now stopped 131 shots this season. Szafranski stopped a school record-tying 152 shots a year ago, and his 131 saves this season ranks fifth all-time. … With his 131 saves, Szafranski pushed his school record career saves total to 436. … After recording four shutouts in his first three seasons combined, Szafranski boasts five shutouts this season. … Szafranski, who also recorded his first collegiate assist vs. SJU Saturday, enters today’s game at St. Thomas with a 1.48 goals-against-average and an .832 save percentage. … Szafranski leads the MIAC in saves (78) and saves-per-game (8.67) … Today’s game is the final collegiate game vs. SMU seniors Szafranski, Lucas Volini (Hoffman Estates, Ill.), Cristian Reyes (Goshen, Ind.) and Jermaine Walker (Evanston, Ill.). … Tuesday’s loss to Augsburg snapped the Cardinals’ two-game winning streak. …  The Cardinals have held their opponents without a goal in both two-game winning streaks this season. …  After scoring just once in SMU’s first 14 games, Juamaine Venter (Rochester, Minn.) scored the game-winner in both of SMU’s wins last week. … Last Sunday’s goal vs. UW-Platteville moved Venter into a tie for the team lead in goals (3) with Steve Boussie (Troy, Mich.) and Ryan Rademacher (La Crosse Wis.). Boussie also leads the Cardinals in assists (3) and points (9). …  SMU has played four overtime games this season. The Cardinals are 4-0-4 in their last eight overtime games and have not lost an OT game since a 3-2 setback vs. Macalester on Sept. 22, 2006. … Both of the Cardinals’ ties this season have come on their home field — and both have been 1-1 decisions.

St. Thomas Tommie Notes: The Tommie enter today’s regular-season finale still in the hunt — along with four other teams — for one of the remaining three MIAC playoff berths. Carleton has already locked up a playoff berth and sits in first, while St. Olaf is second, two points in front of St. Thomas, Concordia and Gustavus. … The Tommies have now played four overtime games in their last five outings — going 1-2-1 in those four games. … With the tie, UST ran its unbeaten streak vs. Concordia to eight straight, while also improving to 14-1-1 at home over the last two seasons. … UST’s Mike Hutton, who played all 110 minutes vs. the Cobbers — finishing with 10 shots, including five on goal — leads the team in goals (8) and points (19). … Elliott Amundson is second to Hutton in both goals (7) and points (17), while Josh Rozner leads the team in assists with four. … Carlos Castelan recorded his fifth shutout of the season vs. Concordia, stopping all five Cobber shots. … Castelan has appeared in 16 of the team’s 17 games, boasting a 1.16 goals-against-average and a .746 save percentage. …

Erin Stenseth
Softball
Stenseth hit .467 in the Cardinals' eight games last week, collecting 14 hits — including four doubles — in 30 at-bats. The SMU freshman, who also scored five runs and drove in seven, boasted a .600 slugging percentage and a .484 on-base percentage, while making seven putouts in left field.
Andrew Warren
Baseball
Warren hit a team-leading .435 in the Cardinals' seven games last week, collecting 10 hits in 23 at-bats. He also scored five times and drove in three runs as SMU went 3-4 in its seven contests last week. The junior left-fielder finished with 11 total bases an a .478 slugging percentage. He also made 56 putouts with three assists defensively.

Sarah Gardner collected 17 kills Wednesday evening vs. Viterbo, giving the SMU senior 1,007 kills for her career. She is the 10th player in SMU volleyball history to eclipse the 1,000 career kills mark.
