Box Score MOORHEAD, Minn. — Saint Mary's University men's hockey coach Bill Moore never really considered himself a triskaidekaphobic, but after his team's performance on Friday — Friday the 13th  — he may have a change of heart.

The Cardinals surrendered three goals in the third period — including two powerplay goals and one short-handed tally — as Concordia handed SMU a 6-3 setback in the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at the Moorhead Sports Center.

“For two periods, we played pretty well, but in the third period, we just didn't seem to do anything right,” said Moore, whose team fell to 0-5-0 with the loss. “It's frustrating — we just can't seem to put a complete 60 minutes together.”

The Cobbers got on the board at 8:21 of the first period, as Casey Olson netted the first of Concordia's two shorthanded goals, but SMU got the equalizer six minutes later on Eric Tenvoorde's (St. Cloud, Minn.) first goal of the season. The 1-1 deadlock would last just four minutes, as Nick Thielen put the Cobbers back on top with an unassisted tally at 18:53.

Morgan Shepherd (Brainerd, Minn.) scored his second goal of the season nine minutes into the second period, but the Cobbers quickly answered, getting a powerplay goal from Shawn Goos three minutes later, giving Concordia a 3-2 lead heading into the game's final 20 minutes.

Marc Harrie made it 4-2 45 seconds into the third period, and Goos and Thielen would each add their second of the game before the period was even 10 minutes old, as Concordia pushed its advantage to 6-2. Mike Glaesmer (Traverse City, Mich.) closed out the scoring with his second of the season with 39 seconds remaining.

The same two teams square off against Saturday in a 2 p.m. conference contest at the Moorhead Sports Center.
