CHICAGO, Ill. — The Saint Mary's University women's basketball team, coming off a nonconference loss at NCAA Division II Winona State on Monday, hits the road for a pair of nonconference games as part of the four-team University of Chicago Midway Classic. Play begins Saturday (Coe vs. Elmhurst, 2 p.m.; SMU vs. University of Chicago, 4 p.m.) and concludes Sunday.

Last Action:
Cherie Kulig (Independence, Wis.) scored a team-high nine points as the Cardinals came out on the short end of an 84-47 decision to NCAA Division II Winona State in their season opener on Monday. The University of Chicago, Coe and Elmhurst all opened their seasons with wins — the Maroons beating Olivet 66-50 last Sunday, while the Kohawks dropped Mount Mercy 75-65 and the Bluejays held off Edgewood 69-67 on Monday.

SMU's Last Meetings vs. The Field:
SMU and Coe squared off a year ago, with the Kohawks coming away with a 79-54 win on Dec. 31, 2008, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Cardinals and Maroons have not met since the 2000-2001 season, when the University of Chicago beat SMU 51-40 during the second day of the University of Chicago's Midwest Classic Tournament. Elmhurst and Saint Mary's, meanwhile, have never met.

Saint Mary's Cardinal Notes:
Cherie Kulig (Independence, Wis.), who, along with Jess Miller (Carver, Minn.), earned honorable-mention All-MIAC honors a year ago, scored a team-high nine points in the Cardinals' season-opening loss to Winona State. … Freshman Jessica Thone (Woodbury, Minn.) scored eight points and added a team-best six rebounds and five assists in her first collegiate game, while Miller finished with seven points. … Miller and Kulig closed out the season as the Cardinals' leading scorers a year ago, averaging 11.2 and 10.7 ppg, respectively. The two have now led the team in scoring in 19 of the teams' last 26 games. … Miller has started all 51 games as a Cardinal.

The Maroons enter this weekend ranked No. 14 in the D3hoops.com preseason poll, while boasting a No. 16 ranking by USA Today/ESPN. … The University of Chicago is coming off a 17-8 season a year ago — including a 9-2 mark against nonconference opponents. … Meghan Herrick and Jamie Stinson led the way for the Maroons vs. Olivet last Sunday, scoring 13 and 11 points, respectively. … UC, which reached the NCAA Division III Sweet 16 two years ago, lost just one starter off last year's squad. … Aaron Roussell is in his sixth season as the Maroons' head coach, boasting a record of 91-38.

After closing last season with a 14-12 overall record, the Kohawks got their 2009-2010 season off on the right foot with a 10-point win over Mount Mercy Tuesday. … Kayla Waskow scored 20 points and added nine rebounds in her first collegiate contest. … Leslie Ware added 18 points for the Kohawks — knocking down 4 of 6 3-pointers. … Coe lost to Loras 53-51 in the IIAC Tournament a year ago, falling two points short of becoming the first six seed every to win an IIAC Tournament game.

Elmburst Bluejay Notes:
The Bluejays, coming off a 14-11 season a year ago, got the 2009-2010 season off to a nail-biting start, holding off a furious second-half rally to beat Edgewood 69-67. … Lyndsie Long scored a game-high 19 points to lead four Elmhurst players in double figures. Meghan Merklein and Ceejay Harris each chipped in 13 points, while Rashida Joiner added 10. … Long earned College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin's (CCIW) first-team all-conference honors a year ago. It was her second straight first-selection. … Long was one of only two juniors selected to the all-conference team. Eleven of the 15 members of the three all-conference teams were graduating seniors. … Long led the Bluejays in both scoring (18.6 points per game) and rebounding (6.7 rebounds per game). She also led the team in field goal percentage (.467), 3-pointers made (32), 3-point percentage (.360), and steals (39).
