Last Action: The Cardinals collected their first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win of the season Saturday against Bethel, bouncing back from a 7-5 Game 1 setback with a 6-3 triumph over the Royals in Arden Hills, Minn. … St. Olaf, meanwhile, split a pair of high-scoring affairs against Concorda Monday, winning the opener 12-10, while dropping the nightcap 11-9.

Last Meeting: The Oles feasted on Cardinal pitching in Game 1 of their conference twinbill, banging out 19 hits — and scoring at least once in every inning — en route to their 21-2 victory. It was more of the same in Game 2, as St. Olaf scored once in the first and four more times in the second, and never looked back in completing the sweep with a 9-4 triumph in Northfield, Minn.

Saint Mary’s Cardinal Notes: The Cardinals’ Game 2 win over Bethel Saturday snapped a pair of streaks — SMU’s season-high 17-game losing streak and its 13-game MIAC winless streak — while also giving coach Nick Winecke his first conference coaching win. … Jack Dwyer (Minneapolis, Minn.) posted his first collegiate three-hit game in the opener vs. the Royals, going 3-for-3 with his first home run as a Cardinal. Dwyer then picked up his first collegiate pitching win in Game 2. … Three SMU relievers threw four innings of shutout ball in preserve the Game 2 win vs. Bethel. … Andrew Ruf (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) threw the final inning vs. the Royals, allowing one hit and striking out two for his first collegiate save. … SMU’s 8-7 loss to Saint John’s last Wednesday was its sixth one-run loss of the season, and second in the last four games. The Cardinals are now 2-6 in one-run games and 0-3 in extra-inning affairs. SMU’s last extra-inning win came on April 26, 2008, when the Cardinals dropped Buena Vista 7-6 in eight innings. …  Tyler Kruse (Minneapolis, Minn.), who went 4-for-7 in SMU’s two games vs. Saint John’s last Wednesday, was 4-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs scored vs. the Royals Saturday, earning the senior outfielder MIAC Player of the Week honors. … Kruse has now had two hits in each of the Cardinals’ last five games. … Zach Olberding (Maplewood, Minn.), who went 2-for-3 with three RBIs in Game 2 vs. the Royals Saturday, has hit safely in 20 of the 24 games he’s played this year. Olberding is also tied with Kyle Ryan (St. Paul, Minn.) for the team lead in multiple-hit games (9) and with Kruse for the team lead in multiple-RBI games (4). … With his two-run home run in the sixth inning of Game 1, Dwyer became the fifth SMU player to hit his first collegiate home run this season. Kruse (vs. Gustavus), Ryan Archambault (Faribault, Minn. / vs. Augsburg), Olberding (vs. Monmouth), and Curt Swanson (Woodbury, Minn. / vs. Monmouth) are the other four. All nine of SMU’s home runs have been hit by players with a combined total of zero home runs prior to this season. … Olberding leads the team in batting average (.380), hits (30), home runs (3), RBIs (16), and slugging percentage (.544). …  Ryan boasts team highs in at-bats (92) and stolen bases (12), while Kruse is the team leader in triples (3) and extra-base hits (9). … The Cardinals have stolen 29 bases this season. … Andy Pass (Prescott, Wis.) tossed his second complete game of the season in Game 1 vs. SJU last Wednesday, allowing just five hits and two earned runs, while striking out four. … Andrew Junker (Lakeland, Minn.) has thrown a team-leading 25.1 innings, while Pass and Willy Shetka (West St. Paul, Minn.) share the team lead in strikeouts with 17. … SMU boasts nine pitchers who have pitched at least 10 innings. … SMU has surrendered 36 first-inning runs. The Cardinals’ Game 2 win vs. Bethel snapped an 0-12 run when their opponent scores in the first ining. … The Cardinals have now won twice (2-19) when their opponent scores first. … SMU is 0-17 when being outhit by its opponent. … With their Game 1 loss to SJU, the Cardinals fall to 0-11 when scoring two runs or less. … SMU has scored six of more runs in all five of their wins. St. Olaf Ole Notes: Nick Fuerst highlighted St. Olaf’s rally from a 9-6 deficit in the opener vs. the Cobbers Monday, belting a two-out, two-run, walk-off home run. … St. Olaf and Concordia combined for seven home runs in the opener, and three more in Game 2. … Monday’s Game 2 loss to the Cobbers was St. Olaf’s third loss in its last four games. … Concordia’s 11 runs in the second game also equaled the most allowed by St. Olaf this season. The Oles had also surrendered 11 in an 11-6 loss to Anderson University on March 21. St. Olaf has now allowed 10 or more runs in each of its last three games. … On the flip side, the Oles’ 12 runs scored in the opener Monday was the nine time this season they have scored 10 or more runs. … Tyler Jones is hitting a team-leading .391 and is one of seven Oles hitting above .300. … Carson Jones leads the team in at-bats (91), runs (36), hits (330, triples (3), total bases (52) and stolen bases (10). … Jones (14) and Paul Wadzinski (19) have combined for 33 walks. … Todd Mathison and Brandon Agneberg enter today’s game as the Oles’ workhorses, pitching 38.2 and 35.2 innings, respectively. The duo are also two of eight St. Olaf pitchers who have logged 10 or more innings. … Mathison also leads the team with 38 strikouts. Agneberg, meanwhile, boasts team-bests in ERA (3.03) and wins (5). … St. Olaf has outscored its opponents in every inning but the eighth, including 30-9 in the sixth. … The Oles are 10-2 when scoring first and have not lost a game when scoring 10 or more runs (9-0).

Andrew Warren
Baseball
Warren hit a team-leading .435 in the Cardinals' seven games last week, collecting 10 hits in 23 at-bats. He also scored five times and drove in three runs as SMU went 3-4 in its seven contests last week. The junior left-fielder finished with 11 total bases an a .478 slugging percentage. He also made 56 putouts with three assists defensively.

Softball
Stenseth hit .467 in the Cardinals' eight games last week, collecting 14 hits — including four doubles — in 30 at-bats. The SMU freshman, who also scored five runs and drove in seven, boasted a .600 slugging percentage and a .484 on-base percentage, while making seven putouts in left field.

During the two-day Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships at SMU on May 14-15, five NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championship automatic-qualifying marks were recorded, while 45 NCAA provisional standards were hit and four MIAC Outdoor Championship records were broken.
