Shorthanded Cardinals no match for St. Thomas in loss

Match Summary vs. St. Thomas

FRIDLEY, Minn. — As if having to face the high-powered St. Thomas men’s tennis team wasn’t tough enough, Saint Mary’s University had to do so without the sevices of their No. 1 singles and doubles player.

And the Tommies certainly didn’t feel sorry for the shorthanded Cardinals, rolling to a 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory at the Lifetime Fitness Center.

“We knew head into the match that we were going to have our work cut out for us, but then, to not have Pawel (Szczepkowski) available made a tough job even tougher,” said SMU coach Jeff Halberg. “I was happy with the way the guys battled — they gave it everything they had.”

The Tommies did not drop a set in handing SMU its seventh conference loss of the season.

David Reckase (La Crosse, Wis.) dropped a 7-5 decision in the opening set of a 7-5, 6-3 loss at No. 3 singles, while Steven Mino (Austin, Minn.) suffered the same fate — in reverse — at No. 6 singles, losing 6-3, 7-5.

The Cardinals close out their season this weekend, traveling to Saint John’s for a 2 p.m. match on Saturday, before hosting Hamline in a noon match at the Winona Indoor Tennis Center on Sunday.
