Match Summary vs. Saint John's

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — It was a new opponent, but for Saint Mary’s University men’s tennis coach Jeff Halberg, it was like going back in time — to two days ago.

Just days after dropping a 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference decision to St. Thomas, Halberg’s Cardinals squared off against Saint John’s — with the exact same results, as the Johnnies won all six singles matches in straight sets en route to a 9-0 conference win at the SJU courts Saturday.

Pawel Szcepkowski (Opolskie, Poland) gave the Johnnies’ Mark Steelman all he could handle at No. 1 singles, only to come up empty in a 6-0 7-6 (7-3) loss. The remainder of the Cardinals proved to be no match for the high-powered Johnnies, as SJU dropped just 20 games in sweeping the remaining five singles matches.

The Johnnies then completed the sweep with 8-1, 8-5 and 8-4 wins in the three doubles matches.

The Cardinals (0-8 MIAC, 4-10 overall) close out their season on Sunday, playing host to Hamline in a 2 p.m. conference match at the Winona Indoor Tennis Center.
