NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Once was nice, but for the Saint Mary’s University track and field teams, twice was even nicer.

Kevin Hein (Zumbro Falls, Minn.) kicked off the Cardinals’ showing at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships with a third-place effort in the discus Friday afternoon.

That was the nice.

The nicer? Sara Harstad (Chatfield, Minn.) and Teri Heinzen (Marshfield, Wis.) followed Hein’s lead, collecting third-place finishes of their own during Saturday’s second day of the two-day event.

Heinzen actually doubled up on her third-place efforts Saturday, earning all-conference honors in both the 100 and 200 — including a school-record performance in the 200.

“It was a great day,” understated SMU coach Shawn McMahon. “Kevin got us off and running on Friday, and the ladies just seemed to pick up where he left off (on Saturday).”

Heinzen kicked off her all-conference double in the 100, clocking a time of 12.65 to place third behind Abby Neigebauer of Saint Benedict (12.26) and St. Thomas' Jenna Ewing (12.52), then followed that up with a school record-setting time of 25.83 in taking third in the 200. Heinzen broke the two-year-old school mark of 25.94, set by Emily Bartusek in 2006.

Following her lead, Harstad chipped in a third-place effort of her own in the hammer throw, uncorking a season-best throw of 45.08 meters to earn All-MIAC honors.

“I’m very pleased,” said McMahon. “We’ve been gearing for this event all season, and everyone came out and really delivered. It was a great way for us to close out the season.”
