MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. — The Saint Mary’s University men’s hockey team, coming off another heartbreaking loss — this time a 4-3 setback at the hands of St. Thomas on Friday at the SMU Ice Arena — hit the road for their rematch with the Tommies, traveling to the St. Thomas Ice Arena for a 7 p.m. conference contest vs. UST.

Last Night: The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 first-period lead and held a 3-2 advantage heading into the final 20 minutes, but St. Thomas scored two goals in the third period — the first 1:27 into the period and the second with 10 minutes remaining — as the Tommies rallied for a 4-3 conference win at the SMU Ice Arena.

Saint Mary’s Cardinal Notes: Morgan Shepherd (Brainerd, Minn.) scored two of SMU’s three goals Friday. It was the senior’s first two-goal game of the season and the first multiple-goal game since recording his first collegiate hat trick on Dec. 7, 2007 against Concordia. … Blake Zemaitis (Mount Prospect, Ill.) also scored vs. the Tommies Friday. … Shepherd also assisted on Zemaitis’ goal, marking his first three-point game since Dec. 7, 2007 vs. Concordia, when he not only scored three goals, but also added two assists. … The Cardinals’ five goals vs. Bethel last weekend came from five different players — Jeff Miller (Portage, Mich.), Will Such (Broomfield, Colo.), Mike Glaesmer (Traverse City, Mich.) and Nick Carlson (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) scored SMU’s four goals vs. the Royals in Friday’s 5-4 loss, while Kevin Wentland (Columbia Heights, Minn.) tallied SMU’s lone goal in Saturday’s 9-1 loss. … Vincent Unklesbay (Maplewood, Minn.), who collected assists on three of SMU’s four goals last Friday vs. Bethel, notched his eighth assist of the season vs. the Tommies on Friday. … With his two goals on Friday, Shepherd leads the team in goals with five, while Anthony Bohn (Spring Hill, Fla.) boasts team highs in assists (11) and points (15). … Bohn is one of three SMU players with 10 or more points — Shepherd (10) and Unklesbay (10) are the other two. … Goalie Jason Horstman (Faribault, Minn.), who finished with 30 saves vs. St. Thomas Friday, has stopped 40 or more shots twice this season — kicking out a career-high 42 shots vs. Concordia on Nov. 14, 2009 and 41 vs. St. Olaf on Jan. 15. … Horstman enters Saturday’s rematch against St. Thomas with a team-leading 4.09 goals-against-average and an .883 save percentage. … SMU’s 38 goals have come from 16 different players, while 19 Cardinals have notched at least one point.  … The Cardinals have surrendered 13 goals in the opening two minutes of a period through 16 games. … SMU has led after two periods four times in its last eight games — and have lost all four. … The Cardinals have been outscored 32-12 in the game’s middle period and 27-11 in the third period. … SMU’s Jan. 9 game vs. UW-River Falls was the second overtime game of the season for the Cardinals, who also tied Nichols 4-4 in overtime on Jan. 2. The Cardinals were 2-0-1 in OT games a year ago.

St. Thomas Tommie Notes: The Tommies, whose 7-4 win over Hamline last Friday snapped their five-game winless streak (0-3-2), has now won two of its last three. … The Tommies’ four goals vs. SMU Friday came from four different players — Evan Mackintosh, Riley Horgan, Steve Murphy and Rob Johnson. … The goals were the first of the season for Horgan and Murphy. … Hamline’s nine goals in last Saturday’s 9-2 Piper win were the most allowed by the Tommies this season and the sixth time this season UST has surrendered five or more goals in a game. … The Tommies have played four overtime games this season, with all four ending in ties — 1-1 vs. Saint John’s, 3-3 vs. Augsburg, 2-2 vs. Milwaukee School of Engineering and 4-4 vs. Concordia. … Parker Burgess leads the Tommies with eight goals, while Andrew Kappers is the team-leader in assists (14) and points (20). … UST boasts four players with 10 or more points — Kappers (20), Rob Johnson (17), Alex Arnason (14) and Burgess (13). … Joe Schrader, who made 20 saves vs. SMU on Friday, has started 15 of the Tommies’ 20 games in goal, compiling a 3.58 goals-against-average and an .870 save percentage. … The Tommies have allowed seven shorthanded goals this season. UST, meanwhile, has not scored while shorthanded. … The Tommies have outscored their opponents 19-14 in the first period, but have been outscored 34-17 in the second and 29-17 in the third. … UST has scored first in 12 of its 19 games, going 6-4-2. The Tommies’ win Friday vs. Saint Mary’s was the first time they have won when their opponent scored first (1-5-2).

Erin Stenseth
Softball
Stenseth hit .467 in the Cardinals' eight games last week, collecting 14 hits — including four doubles — in 30 at-bats. The SMU freshman, who also scored five runs and drove in seven, boasted a .600 slugging percentage and a .484 on-base percentage, while making seven putouts in left field.

Baseball
Warren hit a team-leading .435 in the Cardinals' seven games last week, collecting 10 hits in 23 at-bats. He also scored five times and drove in three runs as SMU went 3-4 in its seven contests last week. The junior left-fielder finished with 11 total bases an a .478 slugging percentage. He also made 56 putouts with three assists defensively.

Sarah Gardner collected 17 kills Wednesday evening vs. Viterbo, giving the SMU senior 1,007 kills for her career. She is the 10th player in SMU volleyball history to eclipse the 1,000 career kills mark.
