ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams kicked off their seasons on Saturday at the Augsburg Pentathlon, and freshman Lisa Lucas (Gunnison, Colo.) certainly turned a few heads in her collegiate debut.
Lucas finished in the top 10 in three of the five events, leading the SMU women to a second-place showing in the four-team event, while the Cardinal men, behind the efforts of Robert Doyle (Hudson, Wis.) matched that second-place performance.
“It was good to just get in the water in a competitive setting again,” said SMU coach
Eric Lindquist. “We've been training very hard and it's always nice to get that first event under you belt.”
Lucas collected eighth-place performances in the 100 backstroke (1:12.18) and the 100 freestyle (1:02.22), while adding a ninth in the 100 IM (1:13.37) and 18ths in the 100 breaststroke (1:27.39) and the 100 butterfly (1:18.55). Lucas finished the day in 10th place among the 34 individuals competing in the pentathlon.
Abby Kratzke (Dent, Minn.) chipped in a seventh in the 100 butterfly (1:09.57) for the SMU women, while Andrea Fogel (Haifa, Israel) was 13th in the 100 butterfly (1:13.31) and 100 backstroke (1:16.52).
Doyle was the only Cardinal competing the men's pentathlon, which including just SMU and Hamline, and the sophomore's efforts were highlighted by a 1:21.38 in the 100 backstroke and a 1:22.03 in the 100 IM.
The Cardinals are back in action next Saturday, returning to St. Paul, Minn., to take part in the Tommie Relays on the campus of St. Thomas.
