MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. —Thursday was just a warm-up for Saint Mary's University's
John Fox (Winona, Minn.), as the SMU senior shared the spotlight with teammates
Mark Ross (Dubuque, Iowa),
Tim Tysk (St. Paul, Minn.) and
Tom Walsh (Prior Lake, Minn.) as the four broke a pair of school relay records during the opening day of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
Friday, Fox took center stage all to himself.
And the light certainly shined brightly on the Cardinal senior.
Fox, who earlier in the day once again teamed with Ross, Tysk and Walsh to shatter yet another relay record — breaking the 200 medley relay mark with a sixth-place time of 1:37.39 — put together his faster 100 breaststroke time of the season, touching the wall in 50.20 to take second in the event, earning the SMU senior all-conference honors for the second year in a row.
And while Fox's second-place performance was the highlight of the evening, it was just one of many stellar — and record-setting — showings by the Cardinals.
Ross took three seconds off the school record in the 400 IM, placing fourth in 4:16.78, while Tysk broke his own mark in the 100 butterfly, touching the wall in 53.02 to win the B Final.
Liz Flynn (Mahtomedi, Minn.) also got into the act, finishing fifth in the three-meter diving with a 342.40 total.
