Cardinal men roll to 9-0 win over MSOE
Donny Nadeau, SMU Sports Information Office
WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary’s University men’s tennis team proved to be rather ungracious hosts Friday evening, as the Cardinals blanked visiting Milwaukee School of Engineering 9-0 in a nonconference match at the Winona Tennis Center.

“This was a great win, and shows that we've made some real strides forward as a team,” said SMU coach Jeff Halberg, noting that a year ago, the Cardinals snuck away with a 5-4 win over MSOE in Milwaukee, Wis. “We beat a tough MSOE team and were superb throughout the match.”

The Cardinals picked up straight-set singles wins from Michael Lunka (Eagan), Robert Steingraeber (La Crosse, Wis.), Sam Puff (Eden Prairie, Minn.), David Reckase (La Crosse, Wis.) and Andrew Rangitsch (Oakdale, Minn.), while Pawel Szczepkowski (Opolskie, Poland) completed the singles sweep with a 6-2, 2-6, 10-4 win at No. 2.

Lunka-Steingraeber and Szczepkowski-Jack Schway (Mendota Heights, Minn.) posted 8-5 and 8-4 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, respectively, while Puff-Justin Loeffler (Winona, Minn.) outlasted MSOE’s Max Ohland-Mark Schadler 9-8 at No. 3.

The Cardinals, who improve to 3-3 with the win, are back in action Saturday, traveling to Northfield, Minn., for a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against St. Olaf.
