RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University women's soccer team did not get the start they were looking for on Wednesday afternoon — but it wasn't for lack of effort, or opportunity.
The Cardinals matched the UW-River Falls shot-for-shot, unfortunately for SMU, none of them hit the back of the net, as the Cardinals fell to the Falcons 3-0 in a nonconference game at Ramer Field.
“We had a number of good opportunities in the first half, but just couldn't take advantage,” SMU coach Eric Zimmerman said. “But overall, I was happy with the way we possessed the ball and the chances we created.”
Tied 0-0 midway through the first half, the Falcons opened up the scoring on a corner kick by Cassie Stang to give River Falls a 1-0 lead going into halftime. The second half wasn't as kind to SMU, as the Falcons scored two goals to seal the game.
“We held our own defensively, but we made two bad mistakes and that's what killed us,” Zimmerman said.
Despite the loss, the game gave Zimmerman a chance to see what his team is made of, and it gave some new players a chance to get acclimated to the college game.
“This was a great opportunity for our team and for the new players to get on the field,” said Zimmerman, whose team returns home for nonconference games against Ripon (Saturday) and Lakeland (Sunday). “I was happy with the way we played, but we can't have those big mistakes.”
