8th 'M' Club Weekend a huge success

WINONA, Minn. — The eighth annual Cardinal M-Club Weekend was another event-filled and exciting weekend. Hundreds of current student-athletes, alumni, parents, and staff enjoyed reuniting with friends and teammates, golfing, honoring award recipients, and competing in alumni events.

The weekend was kicked off on Friday, as men's hockey alumni laced up their skates for an alumni game at the SMU Ice Arena. A very busy Saturday began with the annual golf outing. Over 100 golfers enjoyed the beauty of the Cedar Valley Golf Course, the comraderie of former teammates and alumni, outstanding raffle prizes, and an overall great day on the course. A special thank you to the alumni association board for their assistance on the golf course on Saturday.

Our annual awards ceremony on Saturday evening was a special event as always. We congratulated our student-athletes for the over 100 awards and recognitions they earned during the 2009-10 school year; inducted three outstanding former Cardinals/Redmen into the SMU Sports Hall of Fame — George Hoder '67, Teisha (Smith '00) Devine, and John Tschida '90; named our scholar-athletes of the year — Stephanie Marnocha (soccer) and David Dahlstrom (basebal)l; and announced our most outstanding student-athletes — Sarah Gardner (volleyball) and Andrew Brueggen (track and field).

The weekend concluded with a perfect, cloudless day of alumni games on Sunday. Hundreds of alumni and current student-athletes competed and enjoyed reminiscing with friends and former teammates at alumni games and at the picnic after.

I am so thankful for the connection so many of our alumni have to Saint Mary's University and Cardinal Athletics. I am humbled each year by the turnout of hundreds of alumni, their sharing of great memories as a student-athlete, and their willingness to contribute to the future success of Cardinal Athletics. Thank you to all who made this yet another great weekend. I look forward to seeing even more alumni at future M-Club events.
