ST. PETER, Minn. — There's something about the USTA/ITA Regional Championships that brings out the best in Saint Mary's University's Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.).

For the second year in a row Edwards worked her way to the quarterfinals of the three-day event, hosted by Gustavus. Unfortunately, for the second straight year, the quarterfinals was as far as Edwards would get, as the SMU junior was knocked out by Sam Frank of Gustavus, 7-6, 6-3.

Edwards reached the round of 16 with a pair of straight-set victories on Friday, beating St. Catherine's Michaela Burroughs 6-4, 6-0, then dropping Katie McDonald of UW-La Crosse 6-2, 6-4 in the second round. In the third round against Luther's Alana Humpal, Edwards opened with an easy 6-1 win. The second set, however, was anything but easy, as Edwards outlasted Humpal in a tiebreaker 7-6 (8-6) to earn a spot opposite Frank in Sunday's quarterfinals.

And it wasn't just Edwards' play in singles that turned heads, as the SMU junior also teamed with Rebecca Snyder (Eden Prairie, Minn.) to pick up two doubles wins. The Cardinal duo outlasted St. Scholastica's Danni Sonnenfeld and Callee Conda 9-8 (7-5), before knocking off Fran Fairfield and Katy Lindstrom of Luther, 8-6.

Snyder and Edwards than ran into a buzz-saw in the form of UW-Stout's Abby Werwie and Allie Hinman, who eliminated the SMU duo 8-4 in the quarterfinals.

Killian Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) didn't fare as well as her older sister in her opening-round singles match, falling to Hollis McPeek in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. Snyder also dropped her first-round singles match, losing to Tai Lucero of Coe, 6-1, 6-1.

In the Gustavus Fall Invitational, which also got underway Friday, Andrea Allis () opened with a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win over Kristen Boone of Edgewood, but fell to UW-La Crosse's Andrea Vivian, 6-0, 6-3 in the second round.

Emily DeWitt () and Sarah Kennedy dropped straight-set decisions in their opening-round Gustavus Fall Invitational matches, as DeWitt fall to UW-Whitewater's Abby Martin 6-0, 6-2, while Kennedy lost a pair of tie-breakers in falling to Maria Bailey of Gustavus 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (8-4).
