WINONA, Minn. —
Eric Lindquist will be the first to admit that he doesn't like losing, but the Saint Mary's University women's swimming and diving coach certainly found plenty of positives in Saturday's 134-102 dual-meet loss to Concordia Saturday at the Jul Gernes Pool.
“It's too bad the end result could not have been different, because I was really happy with the way the ladies performed today,” said Lindquist. “There were tons of great swims and some really solid showings — I hate to lose as much as the next guy, but I certainly can't fault our effort today.
“I thought we gave (Concordia) a real run for their money.”
Liz Flynn (Mahtomedi, Minn.) and
Linda Tierney (Cloquet, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals, each picking up a pair of first-place finishes. Flynn continued her dominance of the diving competitions, winning both the 1-meter (201.30) and 3-meter (203.70) events, while Tierney won the 200 IM (2:25.43) and 100 freestyle (59.54).
Sivan Fogel (Haifa, Israel) added a first in the 200 freestyle, while giving SMU a 1-2 finish in the 100 backstroke with a second-place time of 1:12.07.
Abby Kratzke (Dent, Minn.) finished first in the 100 butterfly (1:09.09) and
Anna Smaron (Maple Plain, Minn.) won the 100 breaststroke (1:18.78).
“We've still got a lot of work to do as the season progresses,” Lindquist said. “But for the ladies to put together that type of effort in front of the home crowd, it was great.”
