UM-Duluth Summary
DULUTH, Minn. — The second day of the Saint Mary's University women's tennis team's season-opening weekend didn't start with the same favorable outcome as the first day, but it ended that way, as the Cardinals split a pair of 6-3 nonconference decisions at the Arrowhead Tennis Center.
St. Scholastica handed SMU a 6-3 setback to open the day, while the Cardinals bounced back to beat UM-Duluth by a 6-3 decision.
Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.),
Rebecca Snyder (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and
Killian Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) all picked up straight-set wins at No. 1, 2 and 3 singles for the Cardinals, who were coming off a 7-2, season-opening win over Bemidji State on Saturday.
Edwards and Snyder completed a perfect weekend with straight set victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles against UM-Duluth, while
Abby Voigt (Burnsville, Minn.) added a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4 SMU also swept the three doubles matches to improve their early season record to 2-1.
“It was a good weekend for us,” said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg, whose teams kick off conference play on Sunday, traveling to Lakeville, Minn., for an MIAC match against Carleton. “St. Scholastica gave us a tough tough match — we fell down 4-0 and almost battled all the way back — and we came out and played very well against Duluth.”
