ST. PETER, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's basketball team got 15 points from
Michael Burfeind (Lewiston, Minn.) and 10 from
Tom Gores (Rochester, Minn.), but Gustavus used an 11-2 run to open the second half to pull away from the Cardinals in handing SMU a 62-45 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback Wednesday evening.
The Cardinals came out firing early, getting back-to-back field goals from Gores and Burfeind to take a quick 4-0 lead in the game's opening minute, and gave the Gusties all they could handle in the opening 20 minutes, heading into the locker room down by just five, 30-25.
Unfortunately for SMU, the Cardinals were not able to match that quick start in the second half, as GAC used that 11-2 run to grab a 39-27 advantage, and never looked back. SMU cut the deficit to eight, 47-39, on a 3-pointer by
Pat Freeman (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) with 8:33 remaining in regulation, but the Gusties scored 13 of the next 15 points to put the game out of reach.
The Cardinals shot 38 percent from the field (17-for-45), while going 8-for-14 from the free throw line. Gustavus, meanwhile, hit on 40 percent of its field goals (23-for-57) and was 14-for-19 from the charity stripe.
The Gusties got half of their points from Seth Anderson, who scored a game-high 32 points on 12 of 19 shooting from the field, and an 8-for-9 effort from the line.
The Cardinals (0-5 MIAC, 0-10 overall) are back in action, and back on the road, on Saturday, traveling to Macalester for a 3 p.m. conference contest against the Scots.
