BLAINE, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's hockey teams joins the other eight Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schools in taking part in the three-day MIAC Men's Hockey Showcase at Fogerty Ice Arena.

The Auggies are coming off an eighth-place MIAC finish a year ago. … Augsburg's 10 wins in 2011-12 marked the fourth double-digit win campaign in coach Chris Brown's Auggie tenure, and the third double-digit victory season in a row. … Augsburg will take the ice in 2012-13 wtihout leading scorer and All-MIAC selection Trevor Doden, who closed out a stellar four-year career by amassing 14 goals and eight assists for 22 points. … Doden had a team-high six power-play goals, four game-winning goals and one game-tyhing goal. In 101 career games as an Auggie, Doden finished with 37 goals and 34 assists for 71 points. … The Auggies also graduated top blue-liner David Hines, who  led the Auggies with 12 assists en route to his third honorable-mention All-MIAC selection. In his 104-game Auggie career, Hines finished with 12 goals and 44 assists for 56 points. … The Auggies graduated three of their top four scorers — a trio that accounted for 24 goals, 23 assists and 47 points. … Ben McClellan is Augsburg's top returning scorer, having recorded seven goals, 11 assists and 18 points during his freshman season a year ago. McClellan finished second to Doden in goals and points, while his 11 assists were second behind Hines. … Justin Lochner appeared in 23 of the team's 25 games in goal last season, compiling a 3.25 goals-against-average and a .906 save percentage.

The Royals are coming off a seventh-place MIAC finish a year ago. … Bethel boasted three players on the All-MIAC First Team — including returners Jack Paul and Jon Crouse. … Bethel graduated its top two scorers from a year ago — Chris Fiala (7 G, 17 A, 24 Pts) and Jake Kogler (14 G, 9 A, 23 Pts) — but return their next four leading point-getters. … Paul finished second to Kogler in goals with 11 en route to an 18-point junior season, while Crouse was second on the team with 13 assists and closed out his junior campaign with 15 points. … Dan Harper and Robby Brown shared the goaltending duties a year ago, with Harper posting a 3.74 goals-against-average and an .883 save percentage in 15 games, while Brown owned a 3.56 GAA?and an .893 save percentage in 11 games. … The Royals were virtually unbeatable on their home ice a year ago, compiling a 7-4-1 record on their home ice, while going just 1-11-1 away from Bethel Arena. … Bethel was unbeaten in three overtime games in 2011-12, beating Hamline 4-3, while battling Saint Mary's (2-2) and St. Olaf (1-1) to ties in back-to-back games in mid-January. … Bethel scored first in seven of its eight wins a year ago, going 1-9-1 when its opponent scored first.

The Cobbers are coming off a fifth-place MIAC finish a year ago, missing out on a second straight trip to the MIAC Tournament via tie-breaker criteria with Hamline. … CC kicks off the 2012-13 campaign without four-year standout Erick Gault, who closed out his illustrious Cobber career by earning All-MIAC First-Team honors for the fourth straight season. … Galt finished second in the MIAC in scoring by a defenseman, finishing with four goals and 10 assists for 14 points. … Galt, who recorded 15 points in CC's 25 games a year ago, closed out his career with 12 goals and 55 assists for 67 points. … Aaron Wheeler returns for his senior season, after leading the Cobbers with seven goals last season, while Ben Payne is finished 2011-12 second on the team in assists (10) and points (13). … Chris Neamonitis and Kelly Andrew shared the goaltending duties last season, with Neamonitis owning a 2.10 goals-against-average and a .934 save percentage in 17 games, while Andrew finished with a 2.74 GAA and a .908 save percentage. … Fourteen of CC's 25 games last season were decided by one goal or less. … The Cobbers played four OT games a year ago — all four ending in ties. … CC was unbeaten (7-0-1) when scoring first.

Gustavus Gusties News and Notes:

The Gusties are coming off a second-place MIAC finish a year ago. But that was just the beginning for GAC, which captured the MIAC Tournament title with a 4-2 victory over St. Olaf, and reached the NCAA quarterfinals, before falling to eventual national champion St. Norbert 4-1. … The Gusties have reached the NCAA Tournament in each of their last three seasons — including a run to the NCAA title game in 2009-10. … For the first time in four years, the Gusties will kick off the season without Ross Ring-Jarvi in the lineup. Ring-Jarvi closed out a memorable GAC career by being named to the All-MIAC First Team for a fourth straight season — while also be selected the conference's player of the year. … Ring-Jarvi, who led the team in assists (22) and points (33) — and was second in goals (11) — appearaned in all 114 Gustie games during his collegiate career, finishing with 46 goals, 83 assists and 129 career points. … Ring-Jarvi was the only senior on last year's NCAA team, as GAC returns 77 of its 88 goals and 193 of its 266 points. … John McClean enjoyed a memorable freshman campaign between the pipes, posting a 2.16 goals-against-average and a .923 save percentage. … McLean's 15 wins last season were the second-most in the country among freshman goaltenders. … GAC played eight overtime games in 2011-12, going 2-1-5.

Hamline Pipers News and Notes:

The Pipers are coming off a fifth-place MIAC finish a year ago. … The Pipers won five of their first eight games in 2011-12 en route to a fifth-straight MIAC Playoffs appearance. … Hamline will take to the ice in its season opener against Gustavus on Oct. 26 with first-year head coach Doc DelCastillo behind the bench. … DelCastillo won't be the only new face for the Pipers this season, as HU graduated four players — including First-Team All-MIAC selections Brian Arrigoni, Beau Christian and Jordan VanGilder. … Arrigoni, named to the All-MIAC team for the third straight year, led the Pipers with 14 goals and shared the team lead in points (28) with VanGilder. … VanGilder boasted a team-best 17 assists — leading a quartet of Pipers with 10 or more helpers a year ago. … Joe Rubbelke (3 G, 14 A, 17 Pts), Sam Leslie (5 G, 10 A, 15 Pts.) and Nick Widing (9 G, 5 A, 14 Pts) — all freshmen a year ago — are the Pipers' top offensive returners. …  Christian capped a stellar season with his third straight All-MIAC selection, after compiling a 2.84 goals-against-average and a .913 save percentage. He finished with a pair of shutouts and allowed just 10 goals in his last seven starts. … HU played seven OT games, going 2-2-3, while playing 11 games that were decided by one goal or less.

The Johnnies are coming off a third-place MIAC finish a year ago. … SJU, which was picked to finish eighth in the nine-team league in the preseason coahces' poll a year ago, made its first MIAC Playoff appearance since the 2007-08 season. … The Johnnies return all seven of their MIAC post-season award-winners in All-MIAC First-Teamers John Haeg and Trent Johnson, as well as honorable-mention selections Wally Cossette, Josh Gross, Michael Palmiscno, Jascha Pettit and J.D. Wells. Cossette and Haeg were also named to the six-man All-Rookie team. … Haeg — the first SJU freshman to earn All-MIAC First-Team honors since 2002-03 — led the Johnnies in assists (20) and points, while also tallying a point or more in 13 of the 14 MIAC games he appeared in. … Pettit led SJU with 14 goals a year ago, including seven in his last eight games to end the season. … Wells finished with a 2.24 GAA and .903 save percentage. Wells assumed the starting role when the team was 3-9-2 and started a stretch of seven wins in eight games to clinch an MIAC playoff berth. … SJU returns 94 percent of last season's points (202 of 215). … The Johnnies went 9-2-0 when scoring first, but were just 2-11-2 when their opponent scored first.

Saint Mary's Cardinals News and Notes:

The Cardinals are coming off a ninth-place MIAC finish a year ago. … Twenty of the Cardinals' 25 contests last season were decided by two goals or less — including 14 games that were decided by one goal or less. … Over the past two seasons, the Cardinals have been involved in 26 games that have been decided by one goal or less. … Kevin Wentland closed out the season scoring a goal in six of the team's last eight games and finished with a team-leading 10 goals this season. … First-Team All-MIAC selection Austin Balko was the team's leader in assists (12) and points (20). … Balko was one of six Cardinals with 10 or more points. … Andy Scheib and Jason Horstman shared the goaltending duties last season, with Scheib boasting a 3.44 goals-against-average and an .893 save percentage in 13 appearances, while Horstman owned a 3.42 goals-against-average and an .886 save percentage in 14 games. … The Cardinals played five overtime games this season, going 1-2-2. … Four of the Cardinals' five wins — and one of their two ties — came on their home ice. … SMU defeated two nationally ranked teams this season, beating eighth-ranked MSOE 2-1 in overtime on Nov. 22, then knocking off sixth-ranked and eventual national champion St. Norbert 3-2 on Jan. 6.

St. Olaf Oles News and Notes:

The Oles are coming off a fourth-place MIAC finish a year ago. St. Olaf then picked up MIAC Playoff wins over Hamline (3-2) and top-seeded and regular-season champion St. Thomas (4-3), before falling in the title game 4-2 to Gustavus. … St. Olaf enters 2012-13 without the services of three of its top four scorers from a year ago — including ACHA First-Team All-American Derek Grogan — as well as its starting goalie. … Grogan had seven goals and 14 assists in his final campaign, helping St. Olaf advance to its first MIAC Playoff title game since 2006. … Grogan was a three-time All-MIAC honoree and finished his career with 24 goals and 46 assists in 102 games. … Also gone from the Ole lineup are Peter Rohn, who led the team in goals (11) and points (24), and Charlie Raskob, who led the team in assists (17) and shared the team lead in points with Rohn. … Ross Trousdale is the top returning point-getter from a year ago, finishing with 10 goals, 11 assists and 21 points. … Goalie Ben Leis, who appeared in 21 of the team's 28 games, owned a 2.30 goals-against-average and a .925 save percentage in his senior season a year ago. … St. Olaf played nine overimte games a year ago, going 1-2-6. … The Oles finished 8-4-5 when scoring the game's first goal.


St. Thomas Tommies News and Notes:

The Tommies are coming off a first-place MIAC finish. … UST captured its 30th MIAC regular-season title, but fell to St. Olaf 4-3 in the MIAC Playoff semifinals. … Depsite the loss to St. Olaf, UST received its seveth NCAA Tournaent bid in the last 13 years, falling to eventual national champion St. Norbert 3-1. … St. Thomas' 18-6-2 record a year ago was the Tommies' 30th straight winning season. … Second-year coach Jeff Boeser was named MIAC Coach of the Year last season. … UST returns two of its three First-Team All-MIAC selections in Riley Horgan and Rob Vannelli. … UST also had two of the six players named to last year's MIAC All-Rookie Team — Alex Altenbernd and Michael Krieg. … Horgan led the team in assists (27) and points (32) a year ago. … UST returns four of its top scorers off a team that netted 86 goals in 26 games a year ago. … UST finished 2011-12 boasting six players with 10 or more assists and 10 with 10 or more points. … Drew Fielding and Tyrone Simcoe shared the goaltending duties a year ago, while Fielding compiling a 2.08 goals-against-average and a .917 save percentage in 12 games, while Simcoe owned a 2.64 GAA and a .905 save percentage in 12 games. … UST was 4-0-2 in OT games last season. *Photo by Mike Ekern | UST
