WINONA, Minn. — A year ago, the Saint Mary's University women's tennis team gave St. Scholastica all it could handle, but it was the Saints who came away with the 6-3 nonconference victory in Duluth, Minn.
This time around, the Cardinals had the home court advantage — and revenge on their mind.
And avenge they did, as SMU picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, and followed that up with victories in three of the six singles matches to drop the Saints 5-4 in a nonconference match at the Winona Tennis Center.
“This was a big win for the ladies,” said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg. “Last year, we gave team a good match in Duluth, but came up just short, so everyone was really focused on gaining a bit of revenge this year.
“It was very close very close right to the end — and the ladies found a way to come up with the win.”
Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and sister
McKennah Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) had a hand in three of the Cardinals' five wins, as Bailey won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and McKennah followed up with a 7-6, 7-5 victory at No. 2. The duo then teamed for an impressive 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles.
Killian Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and
Abby Voigt (Burnsville, Minn.) chipped in a 9-8 victory at No. 2 doubles, while
Lindsey Reinisch (Hastings, Minn.) iced the victory with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles.
“We had so many great performances today,” Halberg said. “Bailey played some of her best tennis of the season in her No. 1 singles win and Lindsey came through to seal the win with a solid showing at No. 5 (singles).
“It was a great match and a well-deserved victory.”
The Cardinals, who improved to 4-2 overall with their third straight victory, are now off until next Sunday, when they host Gustavus in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at the Winona Tennis Center.
