STEVENS POINT, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team closed out a busy weekend in impressive fashion on Sunday, as the Cardinals cruised to an 8-1 nonconference win over UW-Stevens Point.
“It was a nice way to finish the weekend,” said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg, whose team lost to Michigan Tech 5-4 and beat St. Norbert 7-2 Saturday in DePere, Wis. “We played very well and the ladies were rewarded for their efforts.”
The Cardinals grabbed a 2-1 lead after the three doubles matches — with
Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and
McKennah Edwards teaming for an 8-4 win at No. 1, while
Killian Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and
Abby Voigt (Burnsville, Minn.) adding an 8-2 win at No. 2.
And as impressive as the Cardinals were in doubles play, they were even more dominant in singles, sweeping all six matches en route to their second straight nonconference win.
McKennah Edwards and Voigt put in the most work, as both dropped the opening set of their matches at No. 1 and No. 4, respectively, before rebounding with back-to-back wins.
Bailey Edwards,
Killian Edwards,
Lindsey Reinisch (Hastings, Minn.) and Deanne Weber (Reedsburg, Wis.) all chipped in straight-set singles victories.
The Cardinals, who improve to 10-9 overall, are back in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next weekend, as they travel to Northfield, Minn., for a conference match against St. Olaf on Saturday, before returning to the Winona Tennis Center for their final home match of the season on Sunday against Macalester.
