MIAC Release
WINONA, Minn. —
Michael Lunka (Eagan, Minn.) closed out the 2012 season the way he began it — with a pair of victories in the Saint Mary's University men's tennis team's season finale against Macalester Sunday.
It was a fitting conclusion to a memorable season for Lunka, who was rewarded for his season-ending efforts on Tuesday, as the Cardinal junior was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week.
In his final weekend of competition, Lunka scored a 6-2, 6-2, win at No. 1 singles Saturday in the Cardinals' 6-3 loss to St. Olaf, while he and
Bobby Steingraeber (La Crosse, Wis.) picked up an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles. A day later against Macalester, Lunka was at it again, winning 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and teaming with Steingraeber for an 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles.
Lunka finished the season with 11 singles wins, while enjoying a stellar doubles campaign, as he and Steingraeber went 19-2 overall — including an 8-1 mark in conference matches. As a team, Saint Mary's finished the 2012 campaign with an overall record of 9-12, including a 2-7 mark in the MIAC. Five of the Cardinals' 12 losses came by 5-4 or 6-3 scores.
