WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's and women's cross country teams kick off their 2012 seasons at home Saturday, as the Cardinals host the SMU Alumni Open.

SMU Alumni Open A Year Ago:
September 3, 2011: Despite having two of its top runners hampered by nagging injuries, the SMU men managed to come within one point of team champion Winona State. WSU won the event with 27 points, while the Cardinals were second (28) and Luther was third (75). On the women's side, the Cardinals placed third as a team with 83 points. WSU finished first with 15 points, while Luther was second (45).

SMU is back in action on Sept. 15, as the Cardinals travel to Northfield, Minn., to take part in the St. Olaf Invitational.

David Feather closed out his stellar collegiate career with a 22nd-place finish at the MIAC Championships a year ago, then added a 65th-place showing in the NCAA Central Regional. Feather stopped the clock in 26:24 across the 8-kilometer MIAC course, while recording an 8K time of 26:55 in the final meet of his career two weeks later. … Feather recorded the year's fastest 8K time at the St. Olaf Invitational on Sept. 17, stopping the clock in 26:23 — the third-fastest time of his four-year career. … Katie Stolz (Forest Lake, Minn.) made the most of her first-ever MIAC and NCAA meets, clocking a 6K time of 24:53 at the conference championships, then posting a career-best time of 24:35 at the NCAA Central Regional. … Stolz's effort at the NCAA Regional was the fastest time recorded by the SMU women in 2011, while her time at the MIAC Championships was the second-fastest. … The Cardinal men's seventh-place finish at the MIAC Championships is their highest in coach Ward Berndt's seven-year tenure. … Cross country runners Regina Quandt and Michael Mockler were named Saint Mary's University's 2012 Outstanding Seniors.
