WINONA, Minn. — It's Monday morning, and time to take one final look back at the highlights of the week that was — by the numbers.
1: Breanna Peterson (Macomb, Mich.), who led the nation with three short-handed goals a year ago, recorded her first short-handed tally of the season in the third period of the Cardinal women's hockey team's conference game against St. Thomas last Sunday.
2: The Saint Mary's University cross country teams boasted a pair runners who earned All-Region honors at last weekend's NCAA Central Regional, as
Katie Stolz (Forest Lake, Minn.) placed 23rd overall with a 6K time of 23:14 and
Aaron Haley (Plainview, Minn.) placed 35th overall with an 8K time of 26:09.
2: Mackenzie Klimek (Hastings, Minn.) — who shared the SMU women's hockey team's assist lead a year ago — picked up her team-leading second and third assists of the season against St. Thomas last Saturday.
2: Bob Marx (Sioux City, Iowa) scored a pair of goals in the SMU men's hockey team's 6-4 loss to fifth-ranked UW-Stevens Point last Saturday. It was the third time in his collegiate career that Marx has scored twice in a game.
3: Katie Stolz (Forest Lake, Minn.) broke the school's 6K school record for the third time this season at the NCAA Central Regional last Saturday, as the SMU junior toured the St. Olaf course in record-setting time of 23:14 — breaking the old mark of 23:23 (not to mention the old, old mark of 23:25).
4: Four Saint Mary's University hockey players netted their first collegiate goals last weekend.
Mike Mezzano (Woodbury, Minn.) and
Nick Albergo (Elmhurst, Ill.) scored their first goals in a Cardinal uniform for the SMU men's hockey team — Mezzano's coming in a 3-1 win over UW-Superior last Friday and Albergo's coming against fifth-ranked UW-Stevens Point a day later — while
Jesse Cwik (Chicago, Ill.) and
Lindsay Paschke (New Prague, Minn.) each tallied their first collegiate goals for the SMU women's hockey team against St. Thomas last Friday.
4: P.J. Heller (St. Cloud, Minn.),
Joe Tonda (St. Paul, Minn.) and
Evan Lecy (St. Paul, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinal men's swimming and diving team at the Macalester Invitational last Saturday, as the trio each posted at least one fourth-place effort in leading the Cardinals' to a fourth-place team finish. Heller was fourth in 50 freestyle (23.89), while Tonda posted fourths in the 200 IM (2:10.22) and 100 backstroke (1:00.24), and Lecy chipped in his fourth-place showings in both the three-meter (142.05) and one-meter (159.30).
7: As a team, the SMU women's basketball team drained seven 3-pointers against UW-La Crosse last Saturday — including back-to-back-to-back treys on their first three shots to open the game.
16: Shelby Auseth (Wanamingo, Minn.) scored a career-high 16 points in leading the Cardinal women's basketball team to an 88-55 season-opening win over UW-La Crosse last Saturday. Auseth's previous career-best was 12 points against Saint Benedict on Feb. 13, 2013.
28: Courtney Euerle (Hutchinson, Minn.) — who was an All-MIAC honorable-mention and MIAC All-Defensive Team selection for the second straight season last year — chipped in 15 points and eight rebounds for the Cardinal women's basketball team against UW-La Crosse last Saturday. Euerle's 15-point effort was the 28th time in her collegiate career that she has netted 10 or more points.
46: Christian Gaffy (Scandia, Minn.) stopped a career-high 46 shots for the Cardinal men's hockey team against UW-Stevens Point last Saturday. It was the most saves by a Cardinal goalie since
Jason Horstman stopped 52 on Feb. 19, 2011.
88: The Saint Mary's University women's basketball team erupted for 88 points in its season-opening 88-55 nonconference win over UW-La Crosse last Saturday. The Cardinals' 88 points were the most by an SMU team since Jan. 12, 2005, when Saint Mary's beat Hamline 88-78.
