MADISON, Wis. — It was the end of one streak and the start of another for the Saint Mary's University women's tennis team Sunday afternoon.

The Cardinals snapped a two-match losing streak with a 6-3 nonconference win over Edgewood, then added a second straight 6-3 victory over St. Norbert in their second match of the day to exit the Nielsen Tennis Center with a two-match winning streak.

“It was a very good day for us,” said SMU coach Jeff Halberg. “We played an excellent match against Edgewood — they are the reigning NAC champions and a very formidable opponent. It was a great test for the ladies, and they really rose to the occasion.

“Add to that a solid performance — top to bottom — against St. Norbert, and it was a very productive day.”

The Cardinals got off to a solid start in their opening match of the day against Edgewood, as Kirsten Hoffmann (Apple Valley, Minn.) and Rachel Luetmer (Loretto, Minn.) won 8-3 at No. 2, and Lindsey Reinisch (Hastings, Minn.) and Deanne Webber (Reedsburg, Wis.) teamed for an 8-2 win at No. 3.

Reinisch, Webber and Luetmer added straight-set singles wins, while Katie Krull (Rochester, Minn.) rallied from a set down to outlast Edgewood's Ashli Paulson 4-6, 6-1, 10-1.

For the second time in as many matches, SMU jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the three doubles matches, with Hoffmann and Krull posting an 8-5 win at No. 1, while Reinisch and Webber added a convincing 8-1 win at No. 3.

Reinisch, Webber and Luetmer completed perfect days with their second straight-set singles efforts of the afternoon, with Krull again needing three sets to post a hard-fought, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 win at No. 4.

The Cardinals, who evened their overall record at 6-6 with their back-to-back wins, are now off until April 6, when they return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a 3 p.m. match against St. Olaf at the Winona Tennis Center.
