WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team started the day hot — and finished even hotter.
The Cardinals, who kicked off Saturday with a 7-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over Concordia, closed out the day — the final home match for SMU's four graduating seniors — with an impressive 9-0 nonconference win over North Central at the Winona Tennis Center.
“The guys finished the day strong,” said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg, whose team improved to 16-6 overall with the win. “It was good to see everyone be able to contribute to the victory.”
SMU raced out to a quick 3-0 lead after the doubles portion of the match, as the Cardinal teams of
Michael Lunka (Eagan, Minn.)/
Bobby Steingraeber (La Crosse, Wis.), Warren Lawrence (Rochester, Minn.)/
Blake Olmscheid (Farmington, Minn.) and
Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.)/
Krystian Drozdz (Orland Park, Ill.) dropped just two games in winning 8-2, 8-0 and 8-0, respectively.
Andrew Rangitsch (Oakdale, Minn.),
Sam Puff (Eden Prairie, Minn.), Kaczorowski,
Gavin Smith (White Bear Lake, Minn.), Olmscheid and Drozdz followed up with six straight-set singles wins — again dropping just nine games in the 12 sets — to complete the rout.
With his 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles, Kaczorowski picked up his 19th singles win of the season tying the program's single-season record, first set by Mark Leeder in 2005 and equaled by Tyler Stevenson a year later.
The Cardinals are back in action next Saturday, as they close out the regular-season with an MIAC match against Macalester in St. Paul, Minn.
