GameDay PreviewWINONA, Minn. — For Saint Mary's University women's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg, the difference in Sunday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match between his Cardinals and Saint Benedict could be summed up in one word: Depth.
And the Blazers' depth proved to be too much, as Saint Benedict handed the Cardinals a 7-2 conference setback at the Winona Tennis Center.
"We played tough, but Saint Benedict was just a little too deep for us," said Halberg. "We gave them a good match, and the ladies battled from start to finish."
CSB jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the three doubles matches, winning 8-4 at No. 1 and No. 2, while adding an 8-3 victory at No. 3.
Lindsey Reinisch (Hastings, Minn.) and
Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.) got the Cardinals on the board in singles play, as Vandenberg tallied a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 4, while Reinisch rallied from a set down to post a 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 win at No. 3.
The Blazers, however, iced the conference win with straight-set victories in the other four singles matches.
The Cardinals (3-6 MIAC, 8-8 overall) are right back on the court on Tuesday, stepping out of conference play for a 4 p.m. nonconference match against Northwestern at the Moore Lake Tennis Center in Blaine, Minn.
