JORDAN, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's golf team kicks off a busy week on Thursday, traveling to Ridges of Sand Creek to take part in the Bethany Lutheran Invitational. The Cardinals then head to Hunters Ridge in Marion, Iowa on Saturday and Sunday to compete in the Mount Mercy Cropper Classic.

The Cardinals head north next weekend, taking part in the 36-hole Saint John's Invitational. The first round will be played at Blackberry Ridge in Sartell, Minn., on Saturday, with Sunday's final round taking place at Greystone in Sauk Centre, Minn.

Blake Westerberg (Red Wing, Minn.), who carded a team-best eight rounds in the 70s a year ago, fired a season-opening four-over-par 77 against Macalester at the MacMary dual last Friday. … As a team, the Cardinals shot a 318 vs. the Scots last Friday — their lowest round since carding a 316 during the opening round of the Wartburg Spring Invitational on April 10, 2010. … Brett Jackson (Edmonton, Alberta) also broke 80 for Saint Mary's against Macalester, firing a 79 in his first collegiate match. … Owen Blakely (Elmhurst, Ill.) and Hunter Rau (Plainview, Minn.) each chipped in 81s and Connor Brandt (Woodbury, Minn.) rounded out the SMU top five with an 83. … Other Cardinals, playing as individuals and not counting in the final team score vs. the Scots, included Hudson Stensgard (Rushford, Minn.) with a 78, David Iten (Fridley, Minn.) with an 85 and Thomas Garside (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) with a 95. … Last season, Westerberg and Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) became the first Cardinal duo to finish with scoring averages in the 70s since 2007, when Jesse Polk '08 (77.3) and Andy Roberts '09 (79.8) accomplished the feat.
