Cardinals battle Tommies to 1-1 MIAC deadlock

ST. PAUL, Minn. — After erupting for three goals in Wednesday's 3-0 nonconference win over Martin Luther—their highest offensive output in their last eight games—the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team was limited to just one goal in its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown with St. Thomas.

And that goal came just four minutes into the opening half.

Fortunately, the Cardinals' defense limited the high-powered Tommies to just a single second half goal, as the two teams battled to a 1-1 overtime tie.

Thanks to their three-goal outburst against Martin Luther on Wednesday, the Cardinals entered Saturday's game against St. Thomas riding a wave of momentum—and Jim Dreshar (Hugo, Minn.) kept that momentum rolling.

Dreshar scored his fourth goal of the season—moving him into a tie for the team lead with teammate Jared Wolt (Farmington, Minn.)—taking a feed from Garrett Grunke (Verona, Wis.) and beating St. Thomas goalkeeper Grant Larson at 3:26 of the opening half.

The Cardinals maintained that one-goal lead over the final 41 minutes of the first half, taking a 1-0 advantage into the break.

Unfortunately, it was the Tommies who used the quick-strike approach to open that second half, as Johnny Mulvahill scored 1:30 into the second stanza to pull St. Thomas even, 1-1.

Neither team would find the back of the net over the final 43:30 of the second half—or in either of the 10-minute overtimes—as Saint Mary's earned its third conference tie of the season.

Evan Claffy (Joliet, Ill.) finished with four saves—including three in the first overtime—while Grant stopped one of the two Cardinal shots he faced.

Saint Mary's (0-6-3 MIAC, 5-8-3 overall)—which snapped a six-game losing streak against the Tommies with the double-overtime tie—is now off until next Saturday, when they travel to Northfield, Minn., for a 1 p.m. conference matchup against Carleton.
