Taylor's goal not enough as Cardinals fall to CC

MOORHEAD, Minn. — Through the season's first nine games, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's soccer team has made one thing abundantly clear—when the Cardinals score at least once, they win.

The Cardinals entered Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown with Concordia a perfect 3-0-0 this season when they scored at least one goal—beating UW-Superior (4-0), Carroll (2-1), and Bethel (2-0).

On the flip side, the Cardinals had been held off the scoreboard in all six of its losses—falling to UW-River Falls (2-0), Luther (3-0), Augsburg (1-0), Saint Benedict (5-0), UW-Stout (2-0), and Gustavus (1-0).

Saturday's game, however, followed neither trend, as Concordia scored two unanswered second-half goals, erasing a 1-1 tie and lifting the Cobbers to a 3-1 conference win over the Cardinals.

Paige McCullough got the Cobbers on the board in the game's 18th minute, beating Cardinal goalkeeper Aubrie Cornell (Columbia, Mo.) for her first goal of the season.

Anna Taylor (St. Paul, Minn.) pulled the Cardinals even 54 seconds into the second half, scoring her first collegiate goal on Saint Mary's first shot on goal.

The deadlock barely lasted five minutes, however, as Sadie Hayes took a feed from McCullough and beat Cornell to put the Cobbers back on top, 2-1. Emily Wendorff pushed the Concordia lead to 3-1 with her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 69th minute.

Cornell—who recorded a season-high 11 saves in Saint Mary's 1-0 loss to Gustavus last Wednesday—finished with 10 saves against the Cobbers.

Saint Mary's (1-4-0 MIAC, 3-7-0 overall) is back in action on Wednesday, when they step out of conference play for a 7 p.m. matchup against UW-La Crosse in La Crosse, Wis.
