COON RAPIDS, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's golf team—led by
Blake Westerberg (Red Wing, Minn.) and
Brett Jackson (Edmonton, Alberta)—was in a stroke-shaving mood during the second round of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships Sunday.
Jackson whittled six shots off his opening-day 85, firing a seven-over-par 79, while Westerberg carded his second straight 79 to lead the Cardinals to a second-day 332—five shots better than their Day 1 effort.
Despite the efforts of Westerberg and Jackson, however, the Cardinals remained in 10th place overall—six shots back of Macalester—heading into Monday's final round of the 54-hole tournament at Bunker Hills Golf Course.
Westerberg, who has not posted a round over 79 all season, heads into Monday's final round owning a team best 158 total, while Jackson is second at 164 (85-79).
David Iten (Fridley, Minn.) carded an 86 on Sunday to go with his Day 1 87 for a 173 total, while
Connor Brandt (Woodbury, Minn. / 86-92—178) and
Kyle Brodt (Roseville, Minn. / 92-88—180) rounded out the Cardinals' top five.
Augsburg maintained its stranglehold on the top spot with a second-day 298. The Auggies' two-day 590 is 10 shots better than runner-up St. Thomas, with Gustavus (605), Bethel (606), and Saint John's (611) rounding out the top five.
Concordia's Cade Montplasir carded a two-under 70 on Sunday for a 143 two-day total and holds a one-shot lead over Pete Sienko of St. Thomas, while Michael Barrette and Brett Gaustad of Augsburg are three shots off the pace.
The final round of the three-day tournament is slated for Monday at Bunker Hills Golf Course, with tee times set to start at 9 a.m.
