WINONA, Minn. — This time around, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's hockey team wasn't about to let their first-period lead slip away.
Jay and
Phil Heinle (York, Pa.) made sure of that.
Jay Heinle scored twice and brother Phil stopped 18 of the 19 shots he faced in leading the Cardinals to a 3-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over St. Olaf Saturday night at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.
"I thought we played very well—and finished what we started," said Saint Mary's coach
Bill Moore, whose team led 3-1 after one and 4-3 after two, only to settle for a 4-4 tie against the Oles in the teams' first meeting Friday evening in Northfield, Minn. "It was good to see us come back after last night and put together a solid performance.
"I was very happy with our penalty kill," added Moore, whose team did not allow a power-play goal in nine St. Olaf man-advantage opportunities. "Our defensemen really stepped up and played well today, and, offensively, we did what we had to do."
For the second game in a row, the Cardinals did not waste any time getting on the scoreboard, as
Kellen Wasell (Edmonds, Wash.) scored his third of the season just 2:32 into the opening period.
Ten minutes later,
Jay Heinle (York, Pa.) made it 2-0, scoring his team-best eighth goal of the year—the sixth time in the Cardinals' eight games the sophomore has found the back of the net—off assists from Jonathan Elliott (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and
Dylan Dock (River Falls, Wis.).
And Heinle was just getting warmed up, as he scored his second of the game—assisted by Wasell and
Taylor Portner (Andover, Minn.)—at 15:14 of a penalty filled second period to give the Cardinals a 3-0 advantage heading into the game's final 20 minutes.
While his twin brother was working his offensive magic at one end,
Phil Heinle did his part at the other, allowing just the one goal—a Justin Plate tally with 4:18 remaining in regulation. Heinle collected 18 saves, including seven in the final period.
Jude Hull had a busy night in goal for the Oles, stopping 47 of the Cardinals' season0-high 50 shots—15 in the first, 14 in the second and 18 in the third.
The Cardinals are back on their home ice next weekend, hosting Aurora for a pair of nonconference games at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena. Friday's game is set for 8 p.m., with Saturday's rematch starting at 3 p.m.
