Cardinals fall to regionally ranked St. Kate's

Match Summary | Photo Gallery

WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary's University of Minnesota coach Jeff Halberg would have loved to have seen his Cardinals pull off the upset of regionally ranked St. Catherine on Friday.

The Wildcats, however, had other ideas.

St. Catherine sandwiched a pair of 8-6 doubles wins around an 8-2 win at No. 2, as the Wildcats grabbed a 3-0 lead and never looked back in handing Saint Mary's a 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback.

"I'm proud of the way we battled," said Halberg. "The ladies gave it everything they had—against a tough regionally ranked opponent. I certainly can't fault the effort they put forth tonight."

Riding the momentum of their three doubles wins, the Wildcats completed the sweep with straight-set wins in each of the six singles matches. Stacey Buss (Chicago, Ill.) forced SCU's Julia Sporer to a first-set tie-breaker, but fell 7-6, 6-1, while both Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.) and Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.) lost identical 6-2, 6-3 decisions.

The Cardinals (0-2 MIAC, 2-2 overall) are back in action on Saturday, traveling to the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minn., for a 5 p.m. conference match against Bethel.
