Jeff Halberg would have loved to have seen his Cardinals pull off the upset of regionally ranked St. Catherine on Friday.
The Wildcats, however, had other ideas.
St. Catherine sandwiched a pair of 8-6 doubles wins around an 8-2 win at No. 2, as the Wildcats grabbed a 3-0 lead and never looked back in handing Saint Mary's a 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback.
"I'm proud of the way we battled," said Halberg. "The ladies gave it everything they had—against a tough regionally ranked opponent. I certainly can't fault the effort they put forth tonight."
Riding the momentum of their three doubles wins, the Wildcats completed the sweep with straight-set wins in each of the six singles matches.
Stacey Buss (Chicago, Ill.) forced SCU's Julia Sporer to a first-set tie-breaker, but fell 7-6, 6-1, while both
Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.) and
Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.) lost identical 6-2, 6-3 decisions.
The Cardinals (0-2 MIAC, 2-2 overall) are back in action on Saturday, traveling to the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minn., for a 5 p.m. conference match against Bethel.
