Wisconsin Lutheran BoxHEARTLAND, Wis. — It was another busy Saturday for the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis team, as the Cardinals squared off against Carroll and Wisconsin Lutheran in a pair of nonconference matches.
And things could not have started better for the Cardinals, as they picked up wins in two of the three doubles matches and added four, straight-set singles wins in handing Carroll a 6-3 setback in their opening match.
Saint Mary's jumped out to a 2-1 lead against Carroll after doubles play, as
Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) and
Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.) teamed for an 8-5 win at No. 1, while
Brenden Amiotte (Rapid City, S.D.) and
Warren Lawrenz (Rochester, Minn.) added a 9-8 victory at No. 3.
The Cardinals would then add singles victories from
Brett Giesen (Cato, Wis.), Amiotte,
Andrew Johnson (Rochester, Minn.), and
Alex Holm (Red Wing, Minn.) at Nos. 3-6 to seal the victory.
And the Cardinals were just getting warmed up.
Saint Mary's completed its nonconference sweep in even more impressive fashion, rolling to a 9-0 victory over Wisconsin Lutheran.
Wolford-Kaczorowski and Holm-
Blake Olmscheid (Farmington, Minn.) dropped a combined one game in winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, while Saint Mary's picked up a forfeit win at No. 3 to grab a quick 3-0 lead.
The Cardinals then dropped just eight games in sweeping the first five singles matches, while also getting a forfeit win at No. 6 to seal the sweep.
"Carroll always gives us a close match, and today was no different," said Cardinal coach
Jeff Halberg, whose team pushed its winning streak to five with the back-to-back wins. "Carroll fought like crazy, but we met the challenge—it was a good win.
"And I thought we were even better against Wisconsin Lutheran," Halberg added. "They won their conference tournament and went to nationals a year ago—so it was a great win and a great way to end the day."
Saint Mary's (6-2 overall) is back in action on Sunday, traveling to Milwaukee School of Engineering for a nonconference match against the Raiders.
