Cardinals dominating in wins over Martin Luther

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's and women's tennis team closed out the weekend in the exact same way they began it—with convincing nonconference victories.

Very convincing.

The Cardinal men dropped just seven games in coasting to a 9-0 nonconference win over Martin Luther on Sunday at the Winona Tennis Center, while the Saint Mary's women nearly equaled their male counterparts effort in recording a 9-0 victory of their own over the Knights.

"The men finished off a good weekend with a solid win," said Saint Mary's coach Jeff Halberg, whose men's squad kicked off its four-match weekend with a 9-0 win over Bethany Lutheran on Friday, before falling to Luther (5-4) and beating St. Norbert (8-1) in a pair of matches on Saturday. "Everyone played well all weekend—now it's off for a well-deserved day of rest."

Halberg was just as pleased with the performance of his Cardinal women, who collected their second 9-0 win of the weekend, having already disposed of Bethany Lutheran 9-0 on Friday.

"The ladies really came to play today," praised Halberg. "This was a great win to finish off a dominating weekend."

The Cardinal men were virtually untouchable against the Knights, getting straight-set, 6-0, 6-0 victories from Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.), Brett Giesen (Cato, Wis.), and Brenden Amiotte (Rapid City, S.D.) at Nos. 1-2-3, while Blake Olmscheid (Farmington, Minn.), Alex Holm (Red Wing, Minn.), and Garen Merritt (Sioux City, Iowa) dropped just five games in sweeping Nos. 4-5-6 in straight sets.

And in doubles, Saint Mary's was just as impressive, sandwiching a pair of 8-0 victories around an 8-2 win at No. 2.

Kirsten Hoffmann (Apple Valley, Minn.) did not drop a game in her No. 1 singles match, while Katie Krull (Rochester, Minn.), Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.), Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.), Ashley Syed (Lakeville, Minn.), and Stacey Buss (Chicago, Ill.) combined to lose just 10 games in sweeping the remaining five singles matches in straight sets.

Add to that 8-2, 8-4, and 8-1 wins in the three doubles matches, and the Cardinals completed their second straight 9-0 victory in convincing fashion.

The Cardinal men (3-2 overall) are off until Saturday, when they return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, traveling to the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minn., for a 7:30 p.m. match against Bethel.

The Saint Mary's women return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Friday, as Saint Mary's entertains St. Catherine in a 6 p.m. match at the Winona Tennis Center.
