GameDay ProgramWINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis team needed a little while to get going, but once they did, the Cardinals were unstoppable Saturday afternoon in their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against Concordia.
The Cardinals battled to a sweep of the three doubles matches, before dominating the singles competition in breezing to a 9-0 conference win over the Cobbers at the Winona Tennis Center.
"We had a tough battle in the three doubles matches," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "But once we got rolling, the ladies played some really great tennis.
"It was an awesome conference win."
The wins did not come easy in doubles, as Kristen Hofmann (Apple Valley, Minn.) and
Katie Krull (Rochester, Minn.) won 8-6 at No. 1, while
Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.)-
Ashley Syed (Lewisville, Texas) and Haley Jorgenson (Fallon, Nev.) and
Stacey Buss (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in 8-3 and 8-5 victories, respectively.
In singles, the Cardinals were a well-oiled machine, winning all six matches in straight sets—dropping just 17 games in the six matches combined.
The Cardinals (2-3 MIAC, 6-4 overall) are back in action next Saturday, traveling to the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center for a 7 p.m. conference match against St. Thomas.
