Cardinals' Dennis crowned MIAC's 400 champion

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Tyler Kircher (Cashton, Minn.) set the stage on Friday, and Morris Dennis (Elk River, Minn.) recorded the perfect encore—in record-setting fashion.
 
Just a day after Kircher uncorked a career-best throw of 50.83 meters to win the hammer throw at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, Dennis gave the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota track and field team its second conference champion, as the Cardinal freshman blew away the field in winning the 400 with a school-record time of 48.42.
 
Maria Missurelli (Franklin, Wis.) narrowly missed giving Saint Mary's its third conference champion, but did join Kircher and Dennis as First-Team All-MIAC performers, earning a second-place showing in the pole vault with a leap of 3.30 meters.
 
Fueled by the efforts of Kircher and Dennis, the Cardinal men placed 11th in the season-ending conference championships, while the Saint Mary's women, behind Missurelli's second-place showing, also finished 11th.
 
Laura Schommer (Hutchinson, Minn.) put together a memorable final conference appearance, placing seventh in the 100 (12.74), ninth in the 200 (26.82), and adding a career-best 3.05 meters in the pole vault.
 
Maya Booker (St. Paul, Minn.) also closed out her stellar collegiate career in impressive fashion, earning a ninth-place finish in the hammer throw with a toss of 44.09 meters, while Jovan Newsum (Glendale Heights, Ill.)—who kicked off his long-distance weekend by placing sixth in the 10,000 with a time of 32:16.92 on Friday—placed 10th in the 5,000 with a time of 15:54.34.
 
In other action Saturday, Bryan Ortman (Chicago, Ill.)—who finished 14th in the long jump on Friday with a jump of 6.15 meters—placed 15th in the triple jump, recording a leap of 12.08 meters, while Phil Emmerich (Mondovi, Wis.) added a 19th-place showing in the javelin (41.29 meters) to his 18th-place effort in the 110 hurdles (17.88), and Paige Schernecker (Manawa, Wis.) was 31st in the 5,000 (20.57.80).
 
In action on Friday, Ross Kinderman (Onalaska, Wis.) chipped in a 10th (6.27 meters) and Jacob Hagen-Erickson (Austin, Minn.) added a 13th (6.19 meters) in the in the long jump, while Alicia Berkenes (Buffalo, Minn.) tallying a 26th in the 800 (2:30.81).
