RIPON, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota volleyball team squared off against a familiar foe in its first match of Day 2 at the Ripon Red Hawk Invitational Saturday afternoon.
Very familiar.
In fact, it had been just three days since the Cardinals and St. Catherine had squared off in the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at the Saint Mary's Gym.
That match ended in a 3-0 Saint Mary's victory.
So did Saturday's.
The Cardinals, behind
Lex Krogstad's (Chicago, Ill.) 30 digs and nine kills each from
Alex Peterson (Harmony, Minn.) and
Macki Fadness (Eau Claire, Wis.), survived a first-set scare with a 27-25 win, then completed the 3-0 sweep with back-to-back 25-17 victories.
Saint Mary's then made it clean sweep through the Ripon Red Hawk Invitational, cruising to a 3-0—25-17, 25-23, 25-12—victory over host Ripon,
Krogstad, whose effort against St. Catherine marked the second time this weekend the senior amassed 30 or more digs—she equaled her career-high with 36 digs against St. Norbert on Friday evening—also recorded a team-best four service aces vs. the Wildcats.
Brittney Hanson (Janesville, Iowa) recorded a team-high 21 assists, while
Tayler MacVey (Dodge Center, Minn.) chipped in 13, and
Jenna Sullivan (Woodbury, Minn.) chipped in seven kills and 13 digs.
Fadness and Krogstad were again the Cardinal leaders in their second match of the day against Ripon, as Fadness recorded a match-high 13 kills and hit .478, while Krogstad recorded 29 digs. The duo's efforts earned them All-Tournament honors.
Sullivan collected a double-double in the tournament-ending win, posting 12 kills and 11 digs, with Hanson and MacVey chipping in 23 and 16 assists, respectively.
The Cardinals, who pushed their winning streak to five straight en route to improving to 12-2 overall, are back in action on Wednesday, heading to St. Paul, Minn., for a 7 p.m. MIAC match-up against Hamline.
