DECORAH, Iowa — All season,
Kaitlin Kling (LeRoy, Minn.) and
Madison Gately (Glenview, Ill.) have led the way for the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota golf team.
Friday afternoon, the Cardinal duo got a reprieve—thanks to the stellar play of
Haley Jung (Monticello, Minn.).
Jung carded a career-best 83 to lead the Cardinals to a second-place finish after the opening day of the 36-hole Luther Invitational at Oneota Golf Course.
Fueled by her best round as a Cardinal, Jung is sitting in a tie for third place overall, four shots back of first-round leader Meg Monson of Mount Mercy, who posted the best round of the day with a 79.
Kling chipped in an opening-day 86, while Gately was close behind at 89.
Paula Avila (Weslaco, Texas) and
Tiarra Thompson (Jonesboro, Ga.) rounded out the Cardinals' top five, shooting 95 and 105, respectively.
The Cardinals close out the two-day Luther Invitational Saturday, returning to the Oneota Golf Course for the second round of the 36-hole tournament.
