MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. - The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's hockey team entered Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against St. Thomas looking for a Friday evening repeat.
The Tommies, however, had other ideas.
St. Thomas scored four unanswered goals-and six of the game's final seven-as the Tommies handed the Cardinals a 6-2 setback at the St. Thomas Ice Arena in the second game of the teams' two-game conference series.
Saint Mary's, coming off a 4-3 victory over the Tommies on Friday-snapping a 22-game winless streak (0-19-3) against St. Thomas-picked up right where they left off in Saturday's rematch.
"I don't think we necessarily played that poorly, I just think we ran out of gas," said Saint Mary's coach
Bill Moore. "And once we got tired, we started reaching, which caused us to take unnecessary penalties-which (St. Thomas) capitalized on."
In a repeat of Friday evening, it was the Cardinals who got on the board first, as
Kelvin Walz (Woodbury, Minn.) needed less than two minutes to give the Cardinals the 1-0 lead, as the sophomore took a feed from
Chad Cesarz (Jackson, Mich.) and beat UST goalie Joe Morris.
And, just like Friday, the Tommies would score the game's second goal.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, that's when the Tommies stopped following the script.
St. Thomas answered Walz's early goal with three of their own-in a four-minute span midway through the first period-to give the Tommies a commanding 3-1 lead after the game's opening 20 minutes.
UST's Brian LaBlanc gave the Tommies a little breathing room, scoring his first goal of the season at 12:50 of the middle period to account for the only scoring in the second period.
Bob Kinne (St. Paul, Minn.) pulled the Cardinals within two, 4-2, midway through the third stanza-netting his ninth of the season off assists from
Martin Gruse (Trenton, Mich.) and Michael Amelio (Venetia, Pa.)-but the Tommies iced the win with back-to-back goals by Chris Benson and Connor McBride over the game's final minutes to give St. Thomas the split in the team's two-game conference series.
Jake Hebda (Firestone, Colo.)-coming off a career-high 45-save effort in Friday's 4-3 victory-finished with 31 saves on Saturday, while Morris kicked out 23 of the 25 Saint Mary's shots he faced.
The Cardinals (4-3-1 MIAC, 7-6-2 overall) step out of conference play next weekend, hosting UW-Stevens Point (Friday) and UW-Stout (Saturday) at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena. Both games are set to begin at 7 p.m.
