WINONA, Minn. — For almost 110 minutes, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota and Concordia women's soccer teams battled to a scoreless stalemate Saturday afternoon.
Almost 110 minutes.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the Cobbers would tally the game's only goal, scoring with just nine seconds remaining in the second overtime to hand Saint Mary's a 1-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at Ochrymowycz Field.
The two teams had plenty of offensive chances, but Cardinal goalkeeper
Gabriella Pederson (Chaska, Minn.) and her Cobber counterpart Maddy Reed were up to the challenge.
Reed stopped all five shots the Cardinals put on net, while Pederson recorded a career-high nine-save effort between the pipes for Saint Mary's.
The Cobbers' 10
th shot on goal, however, eluded the Cardinal freshman goalkeeper, as Emily Payne corralled a loose ball and fired a shot that found the back of the net with nine seconds remaining in OT No. 2.
The Cardinals (0-5-0 MIAC, 2-7-1 overall) are now off until next Saturday, when they head to St. Paul, Minn., for a 1 p.m. conference showdown against Hamline.
