COON RAPIDS, Minn. —
Madison Gately (Glenview, Ill.) made her third round of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships her best, as the senior carded a team-best 86 to help the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's golf team to a ninth-place finish in the 54-hole event.
Kaitlin Kling (LeRoy, Minn.), the Cardinals' top performer in the opening two rounds of the three-day event—including an opening-round nine-over-par 81—finished with a 94 on Monday for a team-low 261 total (81-86-94). Gately kicked off her final MIAC Championships with a 91, and followed that up with an 89 and Monday's 86 for a 266.
Michaela Heuckendorf (Plymouth, Minn.) sandwiched a 96 between a pair of 100s for a 296, while
Grace Gillis (New Ulm, Minn. / 100-102-102—304) and
Sarah Munns (White Bear Lake, Minn. / 113-124-115—352) rounded out the Cardinals' top five.
St. Catherine captured the team title, holding off a late-day charge by Carleton to post a two-shot victory. The Wildcats finished at 949 (319-311-319), while Carleton carded the best final-round of the day with a 311, only to fall two shots short (330-310-311—951). Gustavus placed third with 965 (328-319-318), followed by St. Thomas (321-321-329—971) and Bethel (322-325-332—979).
Alyssa Akiyama of Carleton, fueled by a final-round, two-under 70, took home medalist honors, finishing with an eight-over 224 (77-77-70). Bethel's Christine Piwnica finished second (77-76-78—231), with Abby Conzemius of St. Catherine (80-72-81—233) and Rachel Morris of St. Thomas (80-75-78—233) finished nine shots back.
