Cardinal fall in final minutes to No. 24 Scots

WINONA, Minn. — If the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team was intimidated by Macalester and it's No. 24 ranking in the latest NSCAA Division III national poll, they certainly didn't show it Wednesday evening.

In fact, the Cardinals gave the Scots all they could handle in the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Ochrymowycz Field.

Despite spotting Macalester an early 2-0 advantage, Saint Mary's rallied with single goals both the first and second half, and with two minutes remaining in regulation, it appeared like the Cardinals and Scots were headed to overtime.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, they had to learn the hard way that things are not always as they appear, as Macalester's Austin Burrows scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 2:47 remaining in regulation to lift the Scots to the 3-2 conference win.

Burrows gave Macalester an early 1-0 lead with his first goal of the evening, beating Saint Mary's goalkeeper Nate Levy (Byron, Minn.) less than 11 minutes into the opening half.

Seven minutes later, Logan Harper scored his first of the season, and quickly, the Scots' lead had doubled to 2-0.

Down, but far from out, the Cardinals would claw their way back.

Just 15 seconds after Harper's tally, Sean Butcher (Cave Creek, Ariz.) scored his fourth of the season—and second in as many games—taking a feed from Josh Balsiger (Camas, Wash.) and lacing a shot that easily beat Macalester goalkeeper Zeke Vainer and got Saint Mary's to within one, 2-1.

Macalester would cling to that one-goal advantage until the 70th minute, when the Cardinals struck against on a Kyle Lichttenegger (De Pere, Wis.) blast that beat Vainer and found the lower right corner of the net to knot the game at 2-2.

Burrows, however, would take the wind out of the Cardinals' sails 17 minutes later, netting his second of the game to give the Scots the victory.

Levy finished with five saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Vainer stopped two of the four Saint Mary's shots he faced.

The Cardinals (3-3-1 MIAC, 6-5-1 overall) are back on the road on Saturday, heading to Northfield, Minn., for a 3:30 p.m. conference showdown with St. Olaf.
