WINONA, Minn. — Generating offensive opportunities wasn't a problem for the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team Monday evening in the Cardinals' nonconference game against Simpson.
Converting on those opportunities, however, was another story.
The Cardinals peppered the Storm goal with seven shots—including five in the second half—but came up empty each time.
Simpson, meanwhile, made the most of its offensive chances—especially over the game's final 45 minutes—scoring three times in the second half in handing Saint Mary's a 3-0 setback at Ochrymowycz Field.
After a scoreless first half, Simpson broke the scoreless deadlock on the first of two Tanner Alderson goals in the game's 62
nd minute. Sam Stephens pushed the Storm lead to 2-0 14 minutes later, with Alderson closing out the scoring with his second of the game—and fifth of the season—with 45 seconds remaining in regulation.
Alberto Centeno (Elk Grove Village, Ill.), making his second start of the season, finished with a career-high seven saves in goal for the Cardinals, who a pair of Storm goalkeepers combined on a seven-save shutout.
The Cardinals (6-7-1 overall) are back in action on Thursday, traveling to St. Bonifacius, Minn., for a 7 p.m. nonconference game against Crown.
