WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team entered Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Carleton determined that it would not be their final game of the season.
After all, a win against the Knights—and a little outside help—and the Cardinals would be playing in the MIAC Playoffs for the first time in program history.
Unfortunately for Saint Mary's, Carleton had other ideas, as the Knights eliminated the Cardinals from playoff contention on the final day of the regular season—scoring on a penalty kick two minutes into the second overtime en route to a 2-1 victory at Ochrymowycz Field.
The Cardinals—with five seniors and their head coach making their final collegiate appearances—gave the Knights all they could handle, but it just wasn't quite enough.
Carleton got on the board first, as Trevor Freeland netted his first of the season, beating Cardinal goalkeeper
Nate Levy (Byron, Minn.) with just 1:33 remaining before halftime.
The score would remain 1-0 until the 71
st minute, when
Jared Wolt (Farmington, Minn.) headed a
Sean Butcher (Cave Creek, Ariz.) corner kick past Carleton goalkeeper Brandon Hilliard to knot the game at 1-1.
And force overtime.
And then a second overtime.
In the second minute of the second overtime, the Cardinals were whistled for a foul in the box, and Riley Phelps converted the PK—his ninth goal of the season—to end Saint Mary's season.
Levy finished with a career-high 13 saves in goal for the Cardinals—including eight in the first half—while Hilliard stopped three of the four Saint Mary's shots on goal.
Saturday's game was the final collegiate contest for seniors
Nate Blank (Timnath, Colo.),
James Larson (Polson, Mont.),
Victor Mendoza (Brooklyn Center, Minn.),
Brett Heimerdinger (LaGrange, Ill.), and
Jim Dreshar (Hugo, Minn.), while coach Pete Watkins also bid farewell, announcing just weeks ago that he was retiring from collegiate coaching.
The Cardinals—who finished 8-9-1 overall—the most wins by a Saint Mary's men's soccer team since going 8-8-2 in 2002—closed out their conference slate with a 3-6-1 record.
